irregular timing with EST connected

The car is a 87 TPI that is mainly stock.

Setting base timing to 6* with EST disconnected is no problem at all but when i reconnect the wire the timing goes beserve on idle + - 10 degrees and also the rev counter jumps all over the place. When the engine is rev'd to around 2000 rpm the timing is bang on again and does not move at all. ????

The car is throwing no codes. The distributor has been replaced so I know thats okay so really I'm wondering where the best place to start is.

I'm thinking ESC module, bad wiring or maybe ECM ??

Maybe an bad ignition module and/or pickup coil
I got a brand new MSD 8366 Dizzy and it did kinda the same, rpm needle jumped aroung, car could almost die sometimes, really hard to start, timing jumped around until I gave steady throttle, turned out to be an bad ignition module and pickupcoil, got new from MSD and where on the road again

Is there any way to test these and where abouts on the car are they. Is the ignition module on the drivers side firewall?

when you mention pick up coil is that what i would know as the the coil that sits just left of the distributor ? If so I think i know how to test this (chiltons manual)

Okay I've just searched and can see the pick up coil is located in the distributor so that should be okay as it is all new, I will check though. I'm about to buy a vom frm ebay so that i can start checking the electrical components

The pickup is inside the distributor, and the igntion module is also inside the distributor

What dizzy is it ?

Just because its new it dosent mean its working, I bought a brand new MSD 8366 and the pickup and ignition module was bad from factory .. So even if its new it can be bad. Autozone can check ignition modules.

Keep me posted on your progress.

The dizzy was one i bought off ebay. Autozone isn't an option for me as I live in the U.K

Now you've mentioned that I'll check the components.

I've got a VOM coming monday so at least I'll get a better idea of whats going on with the electrical components
