Backfires at startup with est plugged up, doesn't with it unplugged?

I have a 7747 with a ASDK bin from moates, got the 305 out of my buddies 90' tbi camaro to put in my truck so I've been trying to burn a prom for it since to get it right. Anyways, as of right now when I crank it with the EST plugged up the rpm's will fluctuate pretty significantly & it will backfire like 5-10 times for maybe 20 seconds then it's like someone flipped a switch and it runs fine all the sudden, no matter what the temp is. I tried it from a cold start this morning and even last night after it was warmed up for a while and it still ran terrible at start up. But I noticed when I was setting the timing to 0* with the EST unplugged it didn't have any problems other then a high idle. So I cranked it again this morning with the EST unplugged, idled high but other then that it was fine.

Anyone know what could cause this? I can datalog both instances if I need to. My buddy is the one with the programmer so I was going to apply the forced knock test patch today and see if that does anything.

Oh and also when the EST was unplugged, winaldl read only 3 knocks, but when it was backfiring it just kept going up to around 20 then I turned it off. And no mods other then the usual headers, no cat, ported heads.

Double check your #5 and 7 wires on the dizzy are not reversed.
That and the #1 position is correct when inserted (not off by a tooth)
Could have all wires shifted on the cap by one position also, usually happens when your in a hurry and just don't notice it ended up that way.

I'll check to make sure the wires are plugged up right tomorrow morning, but just to clarify the rotor should be pointing at the #1 wire on the cap when it is at TDC and on the compression stroke right? For 0* initial.
