"VIN E" or "VIN F" / Performance chip mod
"VIN E" or "VIN F" / Performance chip mod
1) How do I check if my 1990 firebird formula 5.0L is a "VIN E" or "VIN F" ..its a multi-port injection engine. ..sorry if this is a really stupid question.
2) The reason I ask is so I can order the appropriate performance chip and set it for maximum fuel economy.. Love the V8 but hate the tickets and dont speed so may as well save on gas..
3) Where do I stick the chip? ..somewhere on the ECM "motherboard" I suppose, right?
4) Do I need to get a power commander to be able to interact with the chip?
5) Thanks for your help!

Look at your VIN. It will either show and E or an F for the engine code. It's as simple as that!
I'm not sure about the other questions you have though sorry.

Re: "VIN E" or "VIN F" / Performance chip mod
The 8th digit of the VIN is the engine code. Check there for the E or F. However, if it is a TPI motor then it's VIN F.
I don't know what chip you are getting where you expect a rise in fuel mileage.
The chip goes into the ECM. Not sure if it a full replacement for what you are getting, or uses the stock chip plus what you are getting.
A Power Commander is for motorcycles, not cars.
My advice, forget about getting a chip.

Thanks! Didnt know the characters of the VIN actually stood for anything.
By Power Commander I meant Power Programmer.. Im much more familiar with motorcycles so pardon the jargon mixup.
In regards to the chip, heres an exert from the Jet Chips site:
"JET PERFORMANCE SIX-PACK CHIP -- Features 6 Unique Different Programs That Easily Change Your Engine Performance To Match Driving Style From All Out Performance To Gas Saving Economy Mode."
I figured it makes sense.. just have the ECM to restrict the fuel/air to a certain degree and improve your mileage at the cost of performace. no??

Re: "VIN E" or "VIN F" / Performance chip mod
Power Programmers are for OBDII vehicles.
I figured with the Power Commander comment that you ride
Don't bother with the JET chips.
Do a search and see what people on this site have to say about them:
