Where to find a stock PROM for a v6

I fried the computer in my 86 and I need to get a new computer. I am scared to use the same PROM thats in it for fear of it being bad. Would I have to go to a junk yard and grab one? What do I need to look for when I go?

dont be afraid of trying your old prom, it should not hurt anything, make sure when installing the ecm the battery is disconnected, turn your key to the On position without starting the car and watch your check engine light, if it blinks on, then off, then steady on, your ecm is reading the prom, if it blinks rapidly DO NOT START the car, it means its bad

if you want another than a junkyard is a good place to look, there should be a sticker on the top of your prom with a 4 digit code(ex. ANTT, AXKW, ect.) try to find a GM vehicle with the same motor and trans as yours and look for the prom that matches

you could also post up your 4 digit code and somebody on this board will know exactly what cars/trucks you could find it in

you could also burn your own proms like I do but you would need supporting hardware and your ecm properly set up to accept a prom like that
