89 2.8l ECM
I was an 89 Firebird with a 2.8L.
I'm wondering will the EMC from an auto trans model work in mine that is equipped with a standard transmission?
I'm asking as I'm forced to delet the A.I.R. Injection system (due to lack of availability of exhaust manifolds). I have access to parts car with an auto transmission, no A.I.R. injection and intact exhaust manifolds.
Thanks in adavance

Short answer is yes. Long answer is why? What happened you need to swap the manifolds? And no, you don't need to worry about deleting the AIR system, just scrap it. Actually, you can avoid this whole swap by just junking the AIR system.
And yes, if you have a damaged PS exhaust manifold, you can get a NEW replacement:

Re: 89 2.8l ECM
When i bought the car both manifolds were cracked. Local parts suppliers could only get right manifolds. my friend/tech suggested putting hearers on. I found a well priced set but when they arrived they weren't AIR injection compatible so modifications were made.
the headers have been nothing but a pain ever since and I want them gone. Now that I have an alternative on hand I wanted to use those parts. The question mark was deleting the AIR injection system.
My follow up question to the reply is this: You're saying I can remove the components without replacing the ECM? Will that cause me any engine lamp issues if I go that route?
Thanks for the quick reply.

Re: 89 2.8l ECM
The ECM doesn't set a code for the AIR system. It's not OBDII.
Funniest part is that I never could find a PS manifold to replace mine that had the AIR fitting (needed to get rid of it as the thing in it never stayed tight and I have NEVER had any AIR parts), but I could find the driver's side manifold all day long...

Maverick, thanks for the info. it is extremely helpful!
I have an unrelated question you may know the answer to as well: Is the ECM compatible if I were to swap the manual trans for and automatic?

Sadly I know very little about the PROM...
The bulk of my knowledge come from my time at Honda. As far as the bird goes I educate myself as much as possible.

Re: 89 2.8l ECM
If you have the 2 separate chips in the ECM, I have a couple PROMs that should work in it, both automatic, but you won't necessarily need them without the AIR system. The AIR system actually has very little to do with the engine performance as once the engine warms up, all of the air from the pump is actually diverted into the catalytic converter, past the O2S. It just helps to catalyze the gases in the exhaust stream (and helps the cat warm up faster first).
