car runs for 30 minutes???

Hello:
I have a 89 IROC with a 350 TPI. The car runs and drives for 30 minutes or so and does fine, then shuts down. After letting it sit for about the same time it will fire back up and do the same thing again. I have changed the fuel pump and had a complete exhaust system put under it. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be? Thank You in advance and GodBless US All.. John

Check for spark once it shuts down. If no spark then odds is that the ignition control module is bad. Followed by either the pickup coil or the ignition coil.

If there is spark there is a good possibility that the injectors are shorting out. This is only if the stock Multec injectors are still in the engine. Measure the resistance of them (preferably when hot). Any that are under 12 ohms are bad.

RBob.

Re: car runs for 30 minutes???

would this just happen to have a MAP on it..

if so.. get a new one!

this should be how it is

starts up runs fine.. then picks up a stumble..and dies.. let sit for 20 to 30 min.. and starts up runs fine the rest of the day.../ dies and let sit for another 30 min...= bad Map.

from my 89 s10,4.3w/Map, my 91 ss454w/Map, and 92Z28 5.7 W/Map, this is why i Post the above

have had my S10 from Day 1
my z28 from day 1
and my SS for the last year.

The stock multecs are notorious for shutting down when they are hot which is indicative of coil failure.

Ignition module. Quick test is to cool distributor with bag of ice and if starts right up - that's the problem.

Sounds like an ignition module to me. Cheap fix, and easy to test. Next time it doesn't start, pull a plug and check for spark.

Re: car runs for 30 minutes???

Thanks for all the replies to my problem...Can someone tell me where the Ignition control module is located? Is it in the distributer also or on the steering Column? I know the pick-up is in the distributer. Thank You and God Bless US All....John

Re: car runs for 30 minutes???

The icm is in the distributor hooked to the pickup. The easiest thing todo is run the car until it warms up and ohm the injectors. Or like rbob said wait until it fails and see if you have spark.
