What do I need to make a new PROM

I installed a lower thermostat and now I'd like the fan to run at the correct time instead of waiting for the engine to get really hot. I was going to install a hayden temp switch, but I'd rather not add the mess under the hood. I'd rather just have the ECM turn it on at the right time.

I need a new PROM, what do I need to make one. I have a moates ALDL thingy and have a good technical background. I know that people can put a switch in and have more than one "profile" for their car to run under. I think I'd like to do something like this so that I can tinker with it. I'd like to try enabling HWY mode too.

What pieces do I need to buy?

www.moates.net:

Burn2
G1 adapter
27sf512 chips

You may be able to get those parts as a kit at a lower price then individual pieces.

Cool, thanks for saving me a bunch of time by not having to figure out the basic parts I need to get going.

One stupid question for you. I can start off with a base that exactly matches what the car is running on now, right?

Re: What do I need to make a new PROM

Update: I think I'm going to order a G3 instead of the G1. Looks like the APU1 is the thing I really want, but the cost is a little more than I planned to spend right away. It might be a smarter way to go though. I already have the ability to flash 27C chips using a burner that I already own, so I don't think I need to buy another unless there is something I don't know yet. Anyone know a reason I can't use 27C chips instead of the 27SF guys?

Re: What do I need to make a new PROM

it depends on how much changing you plan on doing. flashing is so much easier and faster than uv erasing. a ostrich or apu1 much easier than doing alot of reburning and you can do it in real time. If you are building a stroker you might consider dynamic efi ebl p4. with a g3 if you are starting with a tpi sd .bin you will need too use a 27SF512 too switch between 2 .bins

a 27c512 may work but i'm not 100% positive

Re: What do I need to make a new PROM

Thanks, I see now. I was thinking that the 27C parts were available as EEPROMs, I was wrong. I guess I was thinking of 29C parts. Apparently that is what the 27SF part brings to the table.

What's wrong with the 29C parts? Are they just too slow?

nothing wrong with 29c just don't go with less than 200ns

Ok then, I should be able to flash my own then. What is so great about the 27SF then?

Comparison with EPROM and EEPROM/Flash
The difference between EPROM and EEPROM lies in the way that the memory programs and erases. EEPROM can be programmed and erased electrically using field electron emission (more commonly known in the industry as "Fowler–Nordheim tunneling").
EPROMs can't be erased electrically, and are programmed via hot carrier injection onto the floating gate. Erase is via an ultraviolet light source, although in practice many EPROMs are encapsulated in plastic that is opaque to UV light

Re: What do I need to make a new PROM

But a 29C is electrically erasable. Is there something that the 27SF does that a 29C won't do?

Good advise here. At the very least go to dynamicefi.com and read up on all on site. Dont overlook intro to tuning 1 + 2. It will be beneficial to any tuning you do.

Thanks, I'll certainly check it out. I hope I didn't give people the impression that I do things in a hurry without learning, because that's exactly the opposite of what I do. I just wanted a quick point in the right direction. I tend to become obsessed with things I tinker with, I will spend a great deal of time learning as much as I can. I'm sure I'll ask a few questions along the way.

I've looked into this stuff before, even the megasquirt project a long time ago, when it was in alpha stage. One thing or another caused me to have to put my toys away for later. I'm considering purchasing an SD TPI system and putting it on my project truck. I've always had an inkling to inject my old sporty too. It looks like I can probably get everything I need without having to manufacture anything, especially since HD started injecting them.

I have a couple of reasons that I want to be able to tweak my ECM that don't involve performance. I just want to be able to turn of VATS and my EGR should they stop working. I'd like to try highway mode too.

It's becoming obvious to me that real-time tuning is the way to do this. Having played with microcontrollers for years, I know that popping the chip, erasing, flashing, putting it back in, and finally testing pretty much sux after about 20 tries. Programming in-circuit is sooooo much nicer. Even though the APU1 seems expensive at first, it looks like it comes ready to go without having to buy anything else.

Didn't u know you could buy a hypertech fan switch which will turn the secondary fan on earlier?

Yeah, and I'll do that as well. I still want my ECM to command the main fain on at a lower temp than it does. It's really annoying right now. When cruising, my temps are low. When sitting in traffic they climb up to "normal" before the fan kicks on. Plus there's the benefit that the ECM won't turn the fan on when you're doing more than 40 or 45mph since it doesn't help anything then.
