305 Knock Sensor - TPI Swap

I'm on the tail end of completing my TBI to TPI swap. I'm currently getting SES Code 43 (knock sensor).

I ended up using the original TBI knock sensor since I had looked up if the sensors were different and the info I found at the time had said that they were not. Now that I'm getting an SES code I looked it up again and the part numbers are different for a 305 TBI sensor and a 305 TPI sensor (which is what I should have done to begin with!).

Does anyone know if these knock sensors are interchangeable between the TBI and TPI? I'd rather know that it is, in fact, different before I pull the knock sensor out and flood my nicely redone engine bay with coolant.

Thanks in advance for the info!

Where did you put the knock sensor ? It will not flood your engine bay it belongs in the block coolant drain hole. Is this tpi maf or speed density ?

It's located correctly, it will still flood areas of the engine bay that I would prefer to not get flooded.... this is a show car. But i will do what I have to do. The bigger question is, are the knock sensors interchangeable between 305 TBI's and 305 TPI's?

ESC numbers

16126761 (ANRZ) is discontinued. Replaced with HKR for the 4.3l & 5.7L engines, and HKM for the 5.0l engines.
16022621 (BLH), is for 2.8l, 5.0l, and 5.7l engines.

This is a Speed Density application (7730 ECM) so the ESC is built into the MEMCAL. But your part number search shows the ACDelco part as the same between the '92 vin F and E cars. After checking parts stores, the knock sensor part numbers come up different for the LO3 and LB9 engines. It's strange. I haven't gone through the service manual trouble shooting procedure yet so that's probably the next step. Sensor could be wrong still or the ESC part of the MEMCAL could be bad, although the ECM adjusts the timing just fine with throttle and idle settings, so I have to assum the MEMCAL is ok.

Re: 305 Knock Sensor - TPI Swap

The knock sensors are different between TBI and the '90 - '92 TPI engines. Has to do with the resistance of the sensor that is required for the '7730 $8D malfunction testing of the ESC system.

That is why code 43 is being set. When you get a new knock sensor check the resistance between the terminal and body of the sensor. It should be in the 3.9K ohms (3900) area. If not then they gave you the wrong sensor. Better to check it before then after being installed...

RBob.

This is why I asked if you were running speed density or maf .
As Rbob stated the ohms resistance is 3.9k on this sensor.
