Someone stole my ECM

New here, glad to be here. My First camaro, third chevy vehicle that I've owned. It's a 91 z28 5.7 tpi I just got it a month ago. Ran great, felt great. Well on Friday 8/30/2013 I got in the car to go to work. Noticed it was broken into, obviously the radio was gone and I noticed some wires on the passenger side, figured out my ecm was stolen. Bought an autozone pre programmed ecm. Plugged it in, it starts up for about 1 second maybe 2 seconds then dies. No codes are thrown, what could this be? ECM, timing? It is getting fuel and spark. I thought it was the VATS, but if it was the VATS it wouldn't even start right?

Re: Someone stole my ECM

Sorry to hear about your break in...its irritating even when they don't take anything.

I'd be checking the wiring to make sure they didn't damage anything when they ripped the ecm out. Timing should have no bearing unless they went under the hood and moved your distributor. The VATS system doesn't care if its a different ECM, it just sending a 'go-no go' signal to the ECM. And you are correct it wouldn't start anyway if the VATS was an issue.

Your ECM may be bad or incorrect but i'd check wiring first. A bad connection could cause a similar problem. Someone who knows more may chime in with more info as far as you 'new' ECM being bad. People sell '7730 ECMs all the time on the Classified boards so you might find one there.

Re: Someone stole my ECM

I've heard of ECMs being swiped before, but not often. Drop the ECM down and remove the small end cover (2 screws) check which MEMCAL is in it. There will be a blue cover over it and it plugs into the ECM.

No need to remove it, on the left end is the EPROM that has a silver sticker on it. On the sticker is a 3 or 4 LETTER code, get and post that.

There are pictures of this up above in the stickys to give you an idea of what to look for. With the code from the silver label we can tell you if the correct calibration was supplied with the ECM.

{edit in} here is the link to the sticky:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/dfi-...om-calpak.html

The 3 - 4 letter code, in the top most MEMCAL it is AYLP, and the center one is ADPS. Note that this is for reference to know what to look for. The newest calibration for your car (if stock 5.7l) is AUJP.

RBob.

Re: Someone stole my ECM

I have seen the ecms being advertised as preprogrammed but contains no memcal, Like rbob stated it should have a aujp or may contain a anjf . If there is no memcal present you will not have communication trying to blink codes jumping the aldl a to b. The check engine light will be rapidly blinking as well.
Cardone is advertising replacement memcals but who knows the availability .
The theifs took the most a memcal worth some bucks gm 16151348

So I opened it up and it does not have a Memcal. Returned it to autozone and got my money back. No other autoparts store has an ecm. O'reilly's has one but I would need to take my old ecm to program the replacement ecm they said. Could I go with better ecm? I've seen on the forums about Megasquirts and EFI Dynamic or Holley plug and play

Re: Someone stole my ECM

Close, The ebl comes with several calibration files. You need to instal a calibration file first. See dynamic efi's tuning pages and what's up display. The ebl is great for tuning when you do engine upgrades.
I looked and I have a 1227730 ecm and aujp I would sell for $200 shipped in the states if you decide to go that route send me a pm if you like.

Re: Someone stole my ECM

You can get 1227730 ECM's for about $20 at the salvage yard. They are the most common ECM's used in this era cars. Any V6 Cavalier, Beretta, etc... also uses them.

The correct memcal is the hard part, they're still around though.

Just wanted to throw it out there real quick, it could still start and run for about 2 seconds even if there is a VATS issue.
