89 TA 383 Stroker TPI HELP
Hey ALL, You seem to have a good knowlege of these TPI's and would like your thoughts. I have a 89 TA with a 383 stroker. Bought a year ago and it ran great. Now my boy changed the cap and rotor and it would not even start. It appeared the wires were all off one point. I rotated them one pin and it fired right up. However ever since then it runs a little rough at idle, sometimes dies. If you mash on the throttle it will still smoke the tires at will. But anytime you slowly apply throttle it dogs way down missing terrible until you quit moving the throttle then it takes off again running great? I have changed the TPS, MAF, ICM, MAT, Temp sensor, with no fix. I do not remember the code number however it was losing spark. It has a mallory distributer and ACCEL super burn coil. But like I said it runs well except when physically moving the throttle. Any ideas??? What is left besides a bad ECM. Also if I decide to go with a new ECM can I take the EPROM (or whatever the chip is called) out of my old one and plug it into the replacement. I know the VSS, and EGR was taken out before my time when the engine builder tuned it. Any advise would be helpful. I miss my car and once winter comes the shed will be locked for months. The car hates water unless it is given a bath. Thanks PS. I installed a new fuel gauge and have almost 50lbs while running.

Re: 89 TA 383 Stroker TPI HELP
RBob Thanks, I will TRIPLE check the firing order. Is it possible my Son was off two spots. Normally number 1 is at 5oclock on a 350 if 12 is at the firewall. When I put them back on #1 seems more like 3:30. Would it even run if off one spot. I never loosened the distributer.
Thanks again
Thanks again
Re: 89 TA 383 Stroker TPI HELP
Good Morning All,
Last night checked my timing with timing light after I tripled checked the plug wiring and found it to be fine. After warming up ( and burning my eyes) from the extremely rich condition I am set at 8deg BTDC. Car running really rich and rough. I slowly increase throttle with no change. Then about 1800rpm the timing finally changes by JUMPING instantly to approximately 24 deg. at which time motors starts to purr like a giant ford eating lion. Any more ideas???? You guys have been great and are steering me in the right direction so far. Also after hooking up the EST wire connector the timing still sat at 8deg till 1800rpm then jumped up to the 24 or so deg.
