Hi guys i got my bird but i have seem to have a problem with it when i bought it the guy said the speedo had not worked when he had it used to be a stick car now its got a 350 turbo and 326 posi i have read up on this site about the vss sensor but he also said that the car dose not have a computer in it so what i am wondering dose the car have to have some kind of ecm to run anything eles besides the speedo all other gauges work but i am not shur if the oil pressure gauge works its reading past 60 do i am not shur i am going to jack up the car this week to see if the vss is plugged into the trans but any help on this problem would be much appreciated

 

Your car has a mechanical cable that may be broken or the transmission drive/driven gears are damaged.

 

where can i look for the cable and the cars drives fine so i don't think the transmission drive gears are damaged

 

Jack up the car so you can get to the speedometer cable. You might be able to use a cordless drill to spin the cable core to see if that's were the issue is. The speedometer drive/driven gears being damaged does not have effect on the transmission operation.

 

thank you for the info and the pic would the speedometer cable be be in the place where the vss would be on the FI cars ?

 

The vss is built into the ip speedometer cluster, since you are not using it for iac or tcc lockup its irrelevant.

 

An '86 Firebird can have the magnetic VSS attached to the transmission. The ones with the digital dash and the "gauges cluster" will have it. The standard cluster will have a cable driven speedometer.

If there isn't a mechanical cable on the transmission that goes to the speedometer, look for a yellow 4 out buffer box under the dash on the passenger side. That box buffers the magnetic VSS and sends the signals out to the various devices.

If no yellow box, that is the issue, and was likely removed at the same time the ECM was.
