Grumpy has a very valid point. Many of these companies that develop these specialized software for automotive diagnostics or eprom burning are not large multinational companies like Microsoft with guys like Bill Gates ($54 Billion per Forbes).

They are generally started by a small group of enthusiasts that spent a lot of time "figuring" things out and then offered it to the public at a lower price so they could sell it to the "masses" instead of a few "rich people".

If people openly pirate their software, these small companies can't survive and continue to develop and improve their product. A great example is TunerCat.

TC's prom burning software is dirt cheap and they CONSTANTLY are improving their product and adding new constants and tables to their TDFs. If people constantly steal their software and TC is not able to make any profits, TC will go out of business. This means all the people that legitimately own their software will not get any further updates.

Do I have any pirated software on my computer? No I don't. I use to be a programmer and I know the effort that goes into developing things. If I feel the software is valuable enough for me to use it, I buy it. If I don't think the software is valuable enough to purchase it, then I don't use it.

I have EVEN purchased software purposely so the manufacturer WOULD fix known bugs in it. A great example is the Windows Version of the Pocket Programmer. A friend gave me a copy of it to try and I did. The software was very promising, but would not work with my computer.

I contacted the manufacturer (Xtronics) and told them I very much liked their software, but it had some bugs which prevented it from working properly on my computer. I informed them that the MINUTE they could get the software to work on my computer I would GLADLY buy it. They sent me a couple updates, it began to work, and I cheerfully paid my money.

The original post said nothing of pirated software. Niether did the 2nd for that matter. That is an inference that you drew. I too just found Diacom software. The computer Diacom was installed on had crashed and I just found my original disk. I was one of the earliest Diacom dealers, but haven't sold or used it since '95. I also needed a cable, well just the TPI adapter, I found the low speed adapter.

Have you considered that the software(firmware) in the chips you are programming, and helping others program, is copyrighted?

Have you considered that modifying that software is an infringement of the copyright?

Have you considered that using the modified software on the highway is a violation of federal law?

Have you considered changing your nick to Grumpy and Self Rightious?

Given nsimmons responses I think it is pretty self-evident that he does not have a legitimate licence.

If one is a licenced software user of Diacom, they will give you a new cable. I should know because I have contacted Rinda when one of my cables broke. They sent me a new one, free of charge.

If the poster had a valid, legitimate licence for the software, they would just contact Rinda for a new cable. The reason nsimmons doesn't have a cable is because the original purchaser has it.

Given IROC&ROLL's response to Bruce, I was going to suggest IROC&ROLL change his nickname to "Naive"?

As opposed to the great words of wisdom you've spewed forth here? You didn't even address the copyright/legality issue I raised. It would seem your only concern was getting your nose browner.

If your a registered owner then just write Diacom for a replacement, what that has to do with anything is pointless.

Have you read the law ref EPA, and Source codes?. When you do get back with me.

Again, you might reread the law about smog modifications, and your now assuming I running some *illegal* software.

I grew up along time ago, and name calling doesn't bother me.

Have you considered actually researching anything other asking guestions?.

One of the posters to this list, and this current thread, originally sent me a copy of Diacom software for the VN Commodore. I found a schematic on the web using one of the search engines (there were a few different schematics available), after I prototyped the interface, I found that the pirated software that had been sent to me did actually work. I wrote up this "experiment" at the URL originally posted.

I agree that making this schematic avialable could be construed as an act of piracy, so I will remove the schematic from my web site after I contact Ed Rinda with information on how, and by whom, the software (which thus becomes pirated software) was sent to me.

I don't normally read this list, so if you post a reply to this list, you may also consider posting a copy direct to me at mailtoeter@techedge.com.au

Peter.
