MAF and EBL Flash II Conversion

MAF and EBL Flash II Conversion

Hello All,

I recently purchased a 1988 5.7L Iroc Camaro this past August. The car has Illinois extended use antique plates so I haven't gotten to drive it a ton yet, but I think enough to determine that the car runs smoothly (probably put about 1500 miles on it so far).

The car does throw a SES light, seemingly at random. I brought it to a local shop to have it looked at while I was getting other maintenance done (fixing leaky trans and brake lines) and they told me that it is a Code 34 indicating a bad MAF sensor. The guy working on it suggested that I just go to the auto parts store and try swapping out MAF sensors until I get a good one. His words were that for MAFs this old they don't make them new anymore and that for "refurbishing" MAFs all they do is give the old MAF a quick cleaning and don't bother to check and see if they work. It's a pretty simple replacement and he'd have rather just had me do the swapping instead of having me have the car sit at his shop while he buys and returns several rounds of MAF sensors.

One thing I was thinking of doing after I resolved everything and had a solid platform for modifying is I wanted to buy an EBL Flash II and start diving into learning how to tune. Well, the EBL Flash II eliminates the MAF sensor anyways.

My question, is thinking the EBL Flash II conversion will solve my code 34 correct? Is there anything down stream from the MAF sensor that might throw the code 34 and I should check before making the ecm upgrade or will doing this upgrade pretty much eliminate anything that might be generating the code 34?

He is correct. It may take swapping 4 or 5 MAFs until you get a good one.

Make sure that the TPS voltage and minimum air settings are correct. As for MAF diagnostics, the ECM uses RPM and TPS to check if the airflow is out of spec.

With the EBL the MAF is not used, but can remain in place. The EBL systems are all SD and use a MAP sensor.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll go with just upgrading to the EBL Flash II then instead of messing with replacing MAFs. Do I need to find a MAP sensor myself to add then? I did see on the Dynamic EFI website that it said a MAP sensor is added when installing, but I didn't see where it indicates if it's included when you buy the EBL Flash or not. My guess is probably not.

Is there a MAP sensor recommended? My ultimate goal is to add forced induction in a year or two if that is a factor when choosing the sensor.

Genuine GM map sensor would be my recommendation. They're very inexpensive. You can search for one off an LT1 Camaro, and it should work fine. I found a delco number 213-1545 that should work. That sensor should be the same one that came on the later TPI and TBI cars.

You will love the EBL.

You can use a 2-bar MAP for up to 15 psi of boost. Can use it even before boosting the engine. Just need to set the 2-bar MAP option flag in the BIN.
