ADS superchip and other problems...

Hi, im hoping someone can shad any light on this situation ive got.
basically i'll cut right to the chase, i found out yesterday that ive got an ADS superchip 8718-B, fitted to my 86 TranAm. according to the ADS website, it is a 'Strip' chip.
What kinda performance increases and what kinda drawbacks does this chip provide?
I cant seem to find anywhere which tells me!
Next question,
Before i found out i had this chip, id been expericencing a few problems, these may not be due to the chip but i wouldn't know, so sorry if this is in the wrong forum, please bare with me.
switch ign on, service engine soon lights comes on, and seat belts. usual.
start engine, service and seat belts goes out, then 5 secs or so later the service soon lights comes back on.
the service soon lights does go out if you hammer the car, taking 80 in 2nd gear revving fairly high etc. when you lift off it comes back on.
checked for trouble codes via the ALDL thing, only get code 12, (which indicates that the system is in diag mode ye?) no other codes.
once engine is up to working temp, it runs crap. hit the throttle it hesitates like its going to die, really struggles to increase revs, missing loads, does get revs up eventually, sever lack of power not good when you try and exit road junctions etc
strong smell of petrol. idle is rough aswell. this only happens once its up to workin temp tho. when cold its response is fine.
sorry again if this is in the wrong forum, if anyone can help out then please post something, dont just read it!!!
thanks for your time,
Phill

You might try checking the O2 sensor due to it being bypassed in open loop mode (cold). They are fairly inexpensive and if you haven't changed it in awhile it probably needs to be replaced anyway.

ADS is crap. I had one of those and when I read what "modifications" they made to the settings, I fell off my chair laughing. Basically, all it does is give a little more spark in the "high load/mid rpm" range, a little more fuel and locks the TCC a few MPH higher (if you have an automatic).

When I further reviewed the spark tables, it was the biggest joke of all. The spark advance was "bumping up and down" like waves on an ocean. A monkey typing on a keyboard could have come up with a better spark table.

These "off-the-shelf" eproms like ADS, Jet and Hypertech is a complete waste of money. A custom eprom written by someone like Ed Wright MAY be a little better than stock. But basically, unless you spend the time to "tune" your eprom to YOUR engine, you are wasting your time and money.
