Sources for 165 ECMs
Sources for 165 ECMs
I've got a project 85 IROC I'm going to start working on and thought changing out the ECM would be one of the first things I would do.
When I head out to the salvage yard, what other model/year would also have the 165?
Thanks.

Go here http://www.cruzers.com/~ludis/p4xref.html and check it out. There are many cars that used the 7165 ECM. You might get one cheaper if it's from a different car. Camaro name could = more money. This site list all the different ECMs used in different model GM cars.

Hey man do you still have the maf burnoff module, for the 85 iroc?
If you don't know what it is, it's piggybacked on the ecm!
Thanks,

yeah, I still have it. Infact, all of the 85 stuff is still in there. I won't be swapping it out for a while unless it's fried. I take it you're interested in the burnoff mod? Unless you need one right now, I'll let you know what happens with mine.

I have a bunoff module available. I'm located in westminster by the I-405 and the 22 fwy. I swapped to the 165 ECM about a year ago.
e-mail me if your interested.
How do you know if it's bad?

Here are a couple of good links on this swap:
http://www.geocities.com/transam85tp...p_Pictures.htm
and
www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap/.
I know I'm going to do this swap sometime this summer, but I sure wouldn't mind hearing about peoples experiences with doing this swap. Is there a better resource out there for how to do this?

The swap took about 4 hours. It's pretty easy as long as you have the two new relays, pigtails for relays, and a diagram of which wires are changing to what. I did it right the first time and it started right up and I haven't had a problem yet. Just be careful to verify the wiring changes and not to explicitley trust any site for absolutely correct pin changes.

Mike Davis's site is where I got the inspiration and the knowlege to do it. Just confirm the pin changes and be aware that some of the diagrams are from a corvette and the wiring is slightly diferent from the camaro wiring.
Basically you swap several pins on the wiring plugs and you create the circuit shown below. I used a memcal from an 89 camaro and disables the VATS with my burner. My engine was stock at the time of the swap. I wanted to get experience burning PROMS while my engine was stock and old, rather than learn on an engine that required perameter changes to run OK.

Many thanks for your advice.
Will I need any specialty relais?
Or will others(a´ve several from crashed cars) do the job.
For what I´ll need them? Maybe I can look over my shelf to find them.
There is only the last problem: where to get the 1227165?
We will find one.
Many thanks again and best wishes.

165 ECMs are probably hard to find in Germany. They were installed in 86-89 V8 TPI camaros and corvettes. They are somewhat rare to find in my local junkyards. I got mine from e-bay.
