Having problems with cable for laptop....

My friend who is an electrical engineer just finished building me the cable. I can't get it to work. I believe it is the max232. I have a power connection to the cig lighter. What's this about the 10k ohm resistor? Is this not on the schematic? Also, which dip switch do I flip on? Thanks in advance.

If you're running a 1227165 MAF setup then yes, you'll need a 10K resistor between terminals A & B at the ALDL. If it's a 730, then no you won't need it.

I've got the 730. I was screwin around with it today, and I got it to work once. The instant I hit the gas, however, all the values froze at what they were last at. I kept trying it again with the car running. It wouldn't go into the screen with the data, until I shut the car off. Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah, and what about the dip switches? Where should they be set at? Thanks.

Dip switches?!? None of the circuits I'm familiar with on public disclosure have DIP switches. Maybe sonething new? Hmmm... Have you traced the circuit you have 'as-built' and compared it to one of the existing public schematics?

I wasn't trying to be coy, honest... Just that I don't know of any ALDL-type interface which has dip switches. I'm really not hanging in the shadows with a basketful of contraband designs...

He put the dip switches on there because he was sure about which of the wires was suppose to be connected or something. I have no idea. But that's taken care of now. I got the link hooked up and the program starts and I can even get into the data screens (it passes the part where it looks for a link and it beeps). But I still can't read any data. The values are all frozen. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Now I KNOW someone else has brought that same problem up before. Seems I recall it was an operating system or power-saver issue. Are you in a DOS-mode or native window? If not give that a try.

I've tried booting it in DOS mode, and running from Windows as well. Thanks.
