Still having problems with laptop reading data....

I have a 90-92 speed density 5.7 TPI ECM, and a home made MAX-232 cable. I am using the Moates software. All the settings are correct for the program. My friend who is an electrical engineer made the cable for me. We hooked it up to the laptop and the car, and he checked everything with an oscilloscope. The cable is working just fine. When I have the key in the on position without the car running, it reads the data just fine. The TPS changes accordingly when I move the throttle. When I start the car, it reads the data for a second and then freezes. It freezes immediately if I rev the engine as well. At the bottom it says "Err=2" and the percentage continues to rise as the car is running. When looking at the oscilloscope, he noticed that there was some crappy data coming through, but only when the car is actually running. What could be causing this? Also, what is Error 2? ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have Windows 95 on it, but I have also tried just running the program from regular DOS, and the same thing happens. Thanks.

Anyone have an idea? Could it be the ECM itself? Thanks again.

Update: Just tried it on my friend's 90 IROC 5.7 TPI. Works just fine. So I know it's not the cable, the laptop, or the program. What in the car would cause this? Thanks.

Mine used to freeze until I soldered all the connections. Since its only froze up once, and I just shut down for a minute and linked back up. Btw I only run in dos.

Mine froze when I had it set on the SD ECM, and I was scanning my car, which is MAF.

Guys,

Not real sure if this is the reason why, but I had the voltage regulator replaced on the cable and it work a million times better now.

Perhaps this might help you guys too?

Mine used to freeze at least 3-4 times every 20 minutes and especially while trying to log. If I used it just passively it wasn't too bad.

I am also assuming that you made your own cable just as I have.

Good luck!
