ECM Compatablility
After changing my computer chip last night my car wouldn't start. I think I've narrowed it down to a fuel issue. The pump primes and there's pressure at the rail. I'm afraid that I may have fried the ECM changing the chips cause now my drivers side fan comes on and it never did that before with just the ignition switch turned on.
I've got an 89 Camaro with a 350 TPI. Which computers are interchangable with this car?? I"m heading to the junk yard tomorrow. Looking at the tech article for PROM tuning it looks like an ECM from 86 to 90 will work. Do the Mask differences change the compatability?
Has anyone damaged their ECM just changing the chips?? Maybe with a little static shock?? I don't know if they're that sensitive.

Well, first we need to make sure we're talking about the same things...
the ECM you have is a '165. 86-89 used these (I don't think 85's did, you'd have to check the ECM info at diy-efi.org)
the memcal you have (the chip with the carrier that plugs into the ECM) only works for 89's (the 6E mask) because the cold start injector was removed, and some other things. You'll need a chip from the exact same year, same motor, same transmission for it to work (if that's the problem).
Do you get any flashing SES lights?

Any 1227165 but get the latest one possible and the early 86 cars did not have 8192 aldl rate. I am not absolutely certain but Camaros weren't the only cars that had these.
It's possible you damaged it with static electricity but it's also possible the memcal may just be damaged or have a bad connection.

No flashing SES lights. The security light even goes off.
The fuel injectors just aren't doing any injecting...at least that's what I'm thinking. The only thing that I changed between it starting and not starting was the chip. After changing the chip back it still won't start. I'm hoping it's the ECM since the junkyard has one for only $65 and it's the easiest thing to get to.
I'll try reseating the memcal and prom again.
