built a couple cables...but i want a better one, but i need some info

i built my most recent cable using some monster audio cable i had laying around the garage. it is really high quality wire, and is 12 gauge. right now, the cable is about five and a half feet long. is this too long? ihave had problems in the past with missing data points becuase of (i think) a bad cable.

what is the optimum length of a cable? what type of wire?

also, in the interest of making it easier to hook up, i want to have a "permanent" connection to the aldl connector, and run a couple feet or cable to the ashtray with a weatherpack connector. is this a recipe for disaster or what?

i know that the cable are pretty touchy as far as length, RFI, etc. goes, but i want to make it as easy as possible to actually use.

what do you guys think???

(and, yeah, i did a search, with no real sign of help..)

It sounds like you are talking about a scanner cable. If you are what the h$ll are you doing using 12 gauge wire?

It's fairly long, didn't measure it, and transistor is in the rs232 end piece. It works very well.

I would like to try disconnecting or adding a switch to my 10K resistor. There are several posts that say the info will flow with out it. As it is, with it in, it idles at 1000 rpm and and some other things I haven;t figgured out are happening.
