problem with cable that is used with moates software

I wanted to see if anyone had the same problem as I am having and how they got around it.

I hooked up the cable and it worked right away. 2 mins later the data stopped coming and I had no connection. I have not been able to set up a link between the laptop and ECM ever since.

I have tried everything:

Reinstalling Win98
Running from DOS
Connecting up the 12V lead
Using another Laptop
have checked all connections and they are fine

Don't know what else to check. Anyone had the same problem, if so how did you overcome it?

Like I siad the cable worked fine the 1st time now nothing happens.

I also connected up my AutoXray to see if that would work and it does. So the problem is not with the ECM or ALDL.

You needs check the "signal travel" in a logical sequencie. This is:

ECM connector - wire wire wire - DB9 conn. - ALDL cable internal circuit - DB9 conn. - wire wire wire - DB9 conn.

With a little help of an electric tech and a tester, you can make the check and know where the ECM signal is dead.

If the cable worked 2 mins. I think you don't needs 12V supply, other OS or other laptop.

If the ALDL cable is repaired/modified, don't forget re-check the OS and the Laptop again.

Pulled cable apart and all the connectors. The problem was the data stream wire was detached from the DB9 connector DOH!

I opend it up the 1st time and it was all connected must have been just hanging on or a bad solder joint. anyway problem fixed and all is OK.

Once you have a good connection in the DB 9 connector, fill the connector shell with hot glue, once it cools you'll have a hard time breaking the wires loose again.

Morley, I must have read your mind and actually did something similar to stop the cable from twisting in the DB9 connector

Looks safe now!
