Scanning Problems.. need a idea??

Scanning Problems.. need a idea??
I tried to scann a buddys 86 vette today with No luck linking up.
Im using Craigs software... Old and New virsions. No luck. The cable is a New AKM cable. With the Old cable I had(sold to a buddy) I could link to my Z fine. Same laptop Same program.
The new cable is diff. from last version because it doesnt plug into the lighter. The + wire is in with the aldl wires now , So I had to plug into the fuse box. Yes,and Im sure it had 12v+. Checked that with my dvm.
Anyways... So it was a bad day on the Vette. I figure Ill come home and test it on the Z. Guess what, Same laptop and program as befor with my old akm cable. Nope wont link up with the new one....
I e-mailed andrew 1st but figured Id ask here also......
Any ideas..? Maybe a bad cable.... I am getting echo responces but wont link up.
