New to the DIY PROM...
Hey Everyone!
I have heard from various sources that this is the place to go if you want to get into burning your own chips. I have a 1992 Corvette with an LT1, and am about to delve into my first big upgrades. The first stage, which I will be doing in a few weeks, is a cam swap. I am exchanging the stock Vette LT1 cam with a GM cam with the following specs:
222/230 .542/.563 112LSA
Along with swaping out the cam, I am changing to an electric water pump, double roller timing chain, 1.6RR, hardened pushrods, etc..
Then in september, I am getting a set of high flow, stage III ported heads, and a fully upgraded exhaust system (headers, and a cataback system). For reasons out of my control, I have to do the Cam a couple of months before I go ahead and do the heads.
Now, I understand that this cam is definatly going to need some tuning to get running properly. I have read all of the docs on this site, as well as the docs at corvetteforum.com on the process of burning your own chips, and it doesnt seem to hard (the actual burning process). Where I am a bit nervous is the editing of the bin file. I know that right off the bat, I am going to have to adjust my idle, RPM limit, and do some tweaking of the spark and fuel curves.
My question for you guys is, where is a good starting place?? I know that I will have to do a lot of small changes eventualy to get it running perfect, but how do I get in the right ballpark?? Is there anywhere I can find some bin files of similar setups, as a good starting point for tweaking?? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the board.
Traxion's article will get you idea of some of the basics.
You might also want to check out www.dyi-efi.org
they have a GM ECM mailing list and archive that is an invaluable resource. Many members of this board are on that list as well. There are bin files stock and modified on that site as well on their ftp site. Just look up by your ecm and you will find tons usually.
Also in traxion's article there are some links to more information near the top of the article. Those links have some further information like "okay i have all my equipment, where to start".
Hope this helps some...

.. Its all a bit overwhelming from the start, but I am sure, taking it one step at a time, it will all start to make sense. TGO Supporter

Mark, if you can read ALL of the articles that Tim provide links too, plus read the old posts, as Tim recommends AND get it ALL on ther first try - you are smarter than 99% of the people who get into eprom burning.
If you need to read, read and re-read and still have some questions, you are perfectly normal.
Because I live in Canada an it took so long to get my equipment shipped, I had a LOT OF TIME to read, including EVERY post on this board from the VERY FIRST ONE. This REALLY helped me get a great grasp on prom tuning before I even had my equipment.
Today, it feels as natural as falling off a log. Hang in there and read, read and re-read. I still go through some of the old posts.

i agree it is tricky at first to understand all they are talking about. I have had to read and re-read things frequently. One thing that will help you understand alot is to start running scans on your car. That will help you see what people are refering to sometimes. Plus I always like a challange cause I can tinker with my car by programming. Also sometimes reading and reading you still might not get it. Sometimes just doing it is all you need.
