would it help...
Is it possible to make a stock L98 run faster just by playing with the PROM... Or will some mild to heavy mods have to be done first.

For a stock L98 with only exhaust, you are doing pretty good already. Is it possible to improve it? Maybe...depends how close you already are.
I agree with Bruce that gas mileage can DEFINITELY be improved along with driveability. Also, it has been my experience that the typical L98 SD car is overly rich, so you may very well get some performance gain.
The biggest advantage is that you are at a perfect place to start to learn about eprom burning. You already have a fairly close eprom so you can ALWAYS return to what you originally had if you screw things up.
The worst thing to do is try to get into eprom burning when you swap out your engine to a big 406 Miniram with AFRs running high compression, big cam, etc etc etc. Then you haven't got a clue where to start. But starting with your setup will allow you to get into "tweaking" to see what works and what doesn't without having a good starting point.
I don't agree with the practice of these EPROM companies promising HP gains and time improvements. If the initial eprom is optimal, then you are already getting your max HP. I prefer to think that an eprom will allow you to attain the HP that your engine is really capable of attaining. If your intial eprom is way out, then you will experience performance gains. If your initial eprom is already close, then you won't experience much.
But you can STILL experience improvements in gas mileage and driveability even if your are already getting max performance. Max performance is a function of WOT, gas mileage and driveability uses many different parts of the programming.

alright, I'll look into trying this in the near future.
All I do is get a cable for a laptop and use craig moates software, connect it to my eprom... buy tunercat and go at it?
Is there anything I'm missing...? I keep noticing all these numbers as well.. like 70313 or something like that. What do those mean? which do I have. Sorry for the newbie questions, I've tried to use the search function as much as I could. Took me awhile to find craigs site.
