What causes the idle to rise to around 1000rpm??

Hi guys,
Can someone tell me what causes the idle to rise to 1000rpm when the adld cable is attached to the car? This "high idle" mode causes my tranny to get hot really fast!
Question # 2
With my trick flow heads, does the stock timing (sometimes going up to 41 degrees) need to be so high?
Question # 3
With the base timing set at 5.98 do I need to add this # To the rest of the timing chart?

Are you attaching the ALDL cable before or after the key is in the <RUN> position?

If you jumper the diag pins on the ALDL connector after the engine's running it drops into diag mode which opens the IAC, activates the fans, and a few other things to my recollection.

Connect the cable with the key in <OFF> and re-test with the scantool connected and powered.

Only for your information:

There are a mode named "battery mode" in which the idle to rise the necessary RPM's in order to compensate a low battery voltage (it can be a bad connection at bat. terminals too).

Denis v.

Im using win ALDL, & the cable I brought from AKM cables.com.
Denis V,
It only idles high when the cable is hooked up. As soon as the cable is removed it goes right back to the normal idle.

thats because of the 10k ohm resistor in the cable that puts the ECM into ALDL mode which locks the idle to 1k, just another GM design that makes you wonder.
