I know this has been asked before but....

I was wondering how much it would cost to begin PROM burning. I have been reading ALL of the posts, over and over again, and looking all over the net for info on this topic. Im ready to give it a try. Just wanted some advice on like which scan-tool to get, editing software, etc. If somebody could help me out, I would really appreciate it. My first task is laying in my garage(LT4 HotCam). Thanks in advance guys. Great board also!!

How much shopping do you want to do?.
I have a $20 laptop that I use for scanning, and there is freeware for scanning, and editing. So for the price of a Pocket Programmer, some chips, and a Moates Chip holder, you can be up and going for alil over $200. But, you can get fancier and spent more. I started with just the min., years ago, and just have upgraded as funds permitted.

Pocket programmer $149
Flash prom(s) $5.00
winbin $free
zif socket $7.00
help@ thirdgen.org $free
winaldl $free
aldl cable(cost me) $5.00
----------------------------------
aprox total $175

Thats the cheapest route if you have a laptop.I think tunercat is worth the money though.Winaldl works great for me.I've never tried craig moates scanware.I bought a dell laptop for $350.It's 233mhz with 128mb.That is well over the minimum requirements.I have seen 166mhz laptops for under $200.If you can't afford a laptop don't be afraid to get an inverter and put your pc in the back seat for datalogging.Thats why the rear seats fold down.

Ok, I found a dell laptop(200mhz, 64mb RAM) for $75 so I jumped all over that, and I think I'll try the WinBin software first. Where's the best place to get the chips? Do I want the EPROM or EEPROM?? Just so I understand this correctly, I'll use the laptop to scan info from the chip while its in the car? Sorry, you know how newbies are.....I think I'll try little stuff first, like disabling the EGR or VATS. Anymore info would be great. Thanks for all the help.

You want eeprom and craig moates might have some. You scan the ecm from the aldl diagnostic port. It's located by your right knee on the dash.

Ok, got my laptop just a bit ago. I need to get the software, and I guess I need the aldl cable??? Im tearing the motor apart this weekend so I guess I need to scan the stock chip now before I put the cam in right? I was also wondering what the difference in the roller rockers 1.6 would do to the esc module? Is that something that needs to be addressed? Thanks again. If I left anything out, please tell me...

Ok, now Im worried a little. My dad has had this car since new, and I went to just look at the ECM and get kinda familiar with it. I noticed that the seal was broke, meaning it has been open before. Can somebody possible tell me like what numbers should be on the stock chip if its possible???? Hell, the car has ALOT of other stuff it shouldnt have come with(dual piston calipers, alum. driveshaft and alum heads), now Im just wondering if its the right chip or not. And finally, will my VE tables have to be right on the money after the Hot Cam goes in??? And my timing is at 10* base now, so Im thinking I should set that back to stock before scanning? Comments? Answers? Suggestions? Thanks in advance. Somebody check out my website and tell me what ya think.

If your dad had the car since new why don't you ask him if he put a different chip in it.

I already asked him that. He said he never messed with it. He's one of those "if it came that way, leave it alone" people...

Well, Im not exactly sure what you mean. I have checked the RPO codes, and have never found B4C or 1LE anywhere. I did find out just a bit ago that the chip is indeed stock, as the dealer needed to do something to the computer a long time ago, according to my dad. Im assuming maybe they had to reflash it?? Im in need of the cable to plug into the aldl in the car, and Im ready to scan. I was wondering though, since the IAC is a piece of sh$% in my book, is there a way to program the ecm to idle w/out it???? Im beginning to favor this board to the others now....
