Problem linking to 165, Grand National related also

Hey guys, I built a cable to spec using one of the diagrams off of Craig Moates page. It was one of the Max 232 cables. I am having a problem linking to my 165 ECM. The Craig Moates software will not setup a data link with my laptop. I am running Win 95 on it with everything but the Serial and COM ports disabled. Just for fun my buddy who has an '85 GN brought his TurboLink cable over. We decided to try it out on my friend Chris's laptop loaded with Win 2000 to no avail. We then tried his Turbolink cable out on my Win 95 laptop. Nothing we seem to do will allow a link to my ECM. My cable will send and recieve echo responses but never link. The Turbolink cable will not do anything.

Is there somthing "mechanically" that could be wrong? I recently purchased an AKM cable so when that gets here we'll see if it works. I was simply wondering if the cable for the 85 GN would work with my ECM or were we just fishing in the wrong part of the lake totally?

Try building and using the 2 transistor cable (schematics on Craig's site) it has worked well for me and is a lot less complicated to build and less to troubleshoot if it doesn't work.
