what parameters cause spark to be advanced when engine is idling?

Transmission: 5 speed (MM5, MK6)
Axle/Gears: 3.45, 3.73
what parameters cause spark to be advanced when engine is idling?
Doing some trouble shooting. Engine surges from 550-800. With base timing connector disconnected, engine is stable. When connected engine surges and you can watch the spark advanced between 2 and 4 degrees. Still surges with IAC disconnected.
Just scanning the tables to see what else (sensors) can make the ECM adjust spark when idling in park when the engine is warm.
I am using WinBin and a 1987 ABWN image.
Tried a 1988 image, same result. Has to be coolant input, or MAF reading.
Scanner shows nothing out of the norm. MAF did seem to jump once and a while.
Going to check fuel pressure, voltage, MAF burnoff and those sorts of oddities tonight.
