Guys help me out please...
I recently programmed a chip for a buddy. He has a 88 auto vette. I bought the 32b definition for tunercat and started with the ABTF bin. He got the chip today and reported the car is running like crap with the SES light on, and the fans on all the time, (probably)limp home mode.
I am not there, so I had him check the orientation, etc of the chip.
I did not change anything that drastic, just a few simple things for starters.
Can you guys suggest some ideas? What would cause this?
He is out of commission with his car as of now.
The original bin in the car was identified by ABTF 16070733, if this helps any?
Thanks guys.

Hey Funstick,
KNew you would come through with some suggestions.
Yes, I verified the bin a few different time as a matter of fact. All verification were confirmed. Doubt its that.
I did however email him with a few questions, one being the same as you asked. Did you insert the chip with the right orientation? He replied, you mean there is a right and wrong way?
Hopefully he can just verify it with a picture for me and I can get him straightened out.
If not then I will be back here asking more questions. If you can sneek back in the next day or so, your help would be appreciated. If you don't see us back, then thanks for the advice!

Did you erase and re-burn a stock MEMCAL? Did you use an adapter? What is the actual PROM chip that you burned?
Sounds like limp mode to me too, as in, not finding the PROM to load it.
I don't see how he could plug the MEMCAL in wrong but it's possible to plug the adapters and PROM in wrong.
You do know, (I'm sure you do) that a '88 165 PROM is only 16k, right? That's why I asked what the number of the PROM was you burned.

Guys,
It appears he had it in the right way?
He said he turned it around and the car would not even start.
Yeah I doubled up the bin by using
copy /b old.bin+old.bin new.bin
Verified that the chip was programmed etc.
I did however get a new pocket programmer, I changed jobs and they allowed me to use their emp10 at work, before.
I selected the device. National 27c256
It gave the start and finish points for the burn. Used defaults. The only time I needed to change that was when I used the flash memory chips.
Need some advice guys! Sounds to me like we used the wrong version of the bin or something that is not compatible. But it was the ABTF I used and that is what was downloaded off the DIY EFI board.
Thanks fellas.

I take you are using a 16K bin in a 32K chip. I usually just put the start at $4000 and program the upper half of the prom. So far that has worked everytime for me. good luck, Bob

Yeah but you shouldn't have to do that for the UV chips right.
I did have to do that for the flash memory chips....
Can someone clarify this...Thanks.

Yeah Ski,
Its still a 256 not a 128 but since you doubled the bins that
should have worked just the same but it is just easier to
start device at 4000 then you dont have to do all that un necessary stuff.
Did you have 27c256's or did you reuse his prom?
cause if you reused his it should have had the 27c128 if its a pre 90 car.

Here is exactly what I did. It works fine for my 89.
The chip is a 27c256 (non-stock chip bought from Digikey)
Started with the base ABTF bin. Made necessary changes in Tunercat with $32b definition. Did not touch anything except Fan temps, timing, injector size.
Saved bin which is a 16k file.
used the command in DOS: copy /b old.bin+old.bin new.bin
Result was a 32k bin.
Opened Pocket programmer selected 27c256 device. Used default parameters for the start/finish.
Loaded 32k bin into the buffer. Verified the device was erased. Programmed the chip with the 32k bin. Auto verify was already activated and it returned the message that everything was ok.
I then verified again for a second verification.
Sent the chip to him. He reports that the chip is not working right.
He took pictures and the orientation is right.
Kinda stumped.
Thanks for all the help you guys are the best!
87TA, the connecting rods and cam just both came in this week. Should be starting the buildup pretty soon.
