how to test max232 to see if correct

I have loaned a max232 converter from a prominant member of this board (dont want to mention his name, because I dont know if thats okay with him) when he sent it, he included a male and female db25 end so i built the end according to the AKM site. According to the AKM site i should be able to connect to hyperterminal, and have it echo anything i type, but when I connect to hyperterminal all it does is let me type. Also when the cable and converter are connected to my car using craigs program, it just says last byte from com port 0 and it wont link up, any ideas are appreciated.

Are you using a 10K ohm resistor between pins A+B of the ALDL connector?

okay, i got it figured out, i was trying to pull the serial data from the wrong pin! i just happened to be looking through my chilton manua, and it showed that there were two different pins that could be used for serial data, and so i tried the other one, pin M i believe and it works like a charm now
