730 ECM LCD readout

Anyone ever build something like this for the 730 ECM?

http://www.diy-efi.org/gmecm/projects/aldl160/

Does anyone have links to anyone who has?

Went to the site and it is for the 747, so it won't work straight up with a 730.

Another option. You can pick up a used Penitum I laptop for ~$100, build a simple serial cable, run WinALDL and have all that display on the laptop, data logging, knock detection, BLM charting. The list goes on.

Not trying to discourage you from trying it, but you can get a lot more bang for the buck with the laptop and WinALDL.

The VFD (vacuum fluorescent display) does have a "cool" look to it.

Yea I that’s the problem, it's for a 747. I already have laptop; I kind of just wanted this for the cool look. Would it be possible to modifying the code on the PIC to make it read the 730?

I dont see any reason why it would not work. Yes the code in the PIC would have to be changed for the right data stream, but if you can do that it ought not be a big deal.

what would be pretty smooth would be to have a selector switch that told the PIC which changed from $8d, to $58, etc, etc. that would take up quite a bit more space in the PIC, but I bet that with a library or something similar it could be done w/o too much effort.

Also I think that the 160 Baud machine has a slightly different ALDL connector/cable than the 7730's.

AMD, Lattice & Cypress all make good ones. if you are going to have to re-layout the board because of the ALDL stuff, it might be wise to use a CPLD or something that has flash ability. that way you can do t/s & upgrades on the fly (or close to it). it makes troubleshooting the code much simpler.

I'm actually working on that (also using a VFD -- from a slot machine) for the 730. My brother is still working on the circuit board, but once that's done.. I'll be coding the PIC. I'm designing my enclosure to fit where the air conditioning controls go in the console because I don't have A/C or heat. The design currently has 6 buttons for menuing (4 on the bottom, 2 on the side) and a serial port for upgrades or data acquisition.

My brother received all the parts, but he didn't pay his electric bill, so he has no power. Hard to solder with no electricity.
