How much room does stock tuning on a stock car have to grow??

My car it completely stock right now (305 TPI, 5 spd) and I'm just curious how good the stock programming is and if I'd get much more power by reprogramming on a stock car? How much room for improvement would there be if I did full exhaust (1 3/4" SLP's, 3" cat., catback)?
I would like to practice on this motor because there shouldn't be much that needs changing to get a little more power, thus it should help me learn about programming. I'm working on a stroker motor for the future and would like to program that myself but I don't want that to be the first time I program a computer.

On a side note, I saw in the intro. to programming article that there are different adapters that you can plug into the computer, and from which you can plug in different chips without wearing on the actual computer socket itself and still retain the limp home mode option. What kind of adapters are you guys using?

I hope all of this is clear. Thanks.

i dont think youll find the magic 50hp you've been looking for but playing with 2.8l v6's and some v8's i seen gains of upto 20hp pretty consistently. it all depends on how well the factory tunning was done. id say theres a good bit of car to car inconsistency. also you might turn up some gas milage.so they only really good way to see if youll turn up some HP is o start tunning.

I doubt you'll find much if any HP.
BUT,
you can make huge gains in drivibility, and learn alot so when you make changes you know what to do.

You have an oportunity to get familiar with things without chasing ghosts.

Build a WB, scanner, and you can Be One With The Chip. Its a Zen thing...

Mine's a 2.8L MPFI all stock...

Going to start modifying exhaust...and it will be WAY too open for this little 2.8 when I'm done because I'm preparing for the 383...will probably be pretty funny driving a 'bird with under 100 TQ...lol

I do think I can get some gain of programming this PROM...at the very least I'll learn for my 383 :-)

better plan on swapping to a 165 ecm the 302 in there now will max out at 210grm/sec for airflow or just bypass going into the 165 and go stiraght to a 1227730 and get speed density from the outset. most people prefer it but i am indiferent.

currently you have a MAF or mass air flow computer. the ecm see airflow and the it know how much fuel. ecm read as grams sec directly.

speed density is calculated based on load.primarily it just engien temp, intake air temp, and map or manifold aboslute pressure that is factored in. the ecm bases fueling on the input of the sensors and does math to achieve gram sec of air flow.

first most people find with larger high rev more VE efficient engines that the MAF sensor will restrict airflow. where as with a S/D system this is not a problem.

ive also heard from numerous folks the S/D system run better and are eaise to work with. id would sggest tunnign with your 2.8l engine computer but mostly to get the basics. then i would sggest going to either a 1227165maf or a 1227730s/d.

keep asking questions youll get it all figured out sooner or later.

Im aware of the advantages of SD...didn't realize the MPFI was comparable to MAF or SD...

What would it take to convert the 2.8L to SD...SD is what I'm building for the 383, so that's where I need the expertise anyway...
