Who has gotten their WinALDL cable to work with a USB to Serial Adaptor
My Compaq notebook does not have any 9 pin COM ports. I was wondering, before I decide to buy a USB to Serial adaptor, if anyone has had any success using these with their WinALDL program. THANKS FOR ANY REPLIES!!!!!
Id suggest using a pcmcia to serial adaptor. Im guessing if your laptop doesn't have a com port that your running Win XP...I could never get my usb to serial adaptor to work with Win XP but did use it in Win 98 jsut fine (had to be a driver issue) but the pcmcia to serial works great in both 98 and XP and even in dos if i ever find the need. Mine is from socket I/O and is ruggedize (SP?), meaning it doesn't have the dongle that plugs into the card rather just a hardwired pigtail. Much better in a car if you ask me no way for it to come out or bend the little pins.

15 pin? are you sure it is not a 25 pin?
DB-9 connector , DB-25 connector , name
1 8 CD
2 3 RxD
3 2 TxD
4 20 DTR
5 7 GND
6 6 DSR
7 4 RTS
8 5 CTS
9 22 RI
Instead of pins 3,4 and 5 you use 2,20 and 7 on the 25 pin connector.

LOL yeah if you dont have a 9 pin or a 25 pin, your looking at monitor output (especially if it is a DB15). My recommendation stands whether running 98 or xp I'd go pcmcia to serial...more reliable IMHO.

which pcmcia to serial adaptor are you using, and which serial to USB adaptor did you use, and where did you get them.
Like in my original post I said the PCMCIA to SERIAL adaptor is made by Socket I/O but make sure you get the ruggedized one...so you dont have to deal with the dongle that the non ruggedized versions have....the usb to serial is made by Belkin...I got the Socket I/O adaptor from work...but its available at most computer shops or on the web. and the belkin i got off ebay..same for it..any good computer store should have it
I remembered this post from some time back. I recently bought a USB to serial adapter off ebay. I configured it as COM1, and it works great with WinALDL. I also bought a USB to parallel adapter, and it does not work with my Needhams EMP30 programmer. I can't configure it to be LPT1, it shows up as a windows printing device. The EMP30 looks for LPT1. Oh well.
