Pocket Programmer and Win ME

I just got my PC upgraded to Win ME, and decided to try burning a chip for fun. I have been out of it for a few months this winter. I am running the DOS version of PP, and when I run fileprom, from windoz, it says it cannot find the PP.

I did some reading and searching, and it don't look good for the progammer and win ME. Does anyone have the newer PP windows software working on a ME machine?

I was running win98. But in order to burn chips, I still had to re-boot in DOS mode. Looks like ME don't even have that option. I just spent the cash on ME, and can't beleive I have a new problem with this programmer. I may send email to Tansitronics.

TIA!

I hate to be the one to bring bad news but...... I bought a new computer almost 2 years ago. My new one has Windows ME and my old one had Win98.
I would give anything for my old one back... WinME SUCKS!! I have heard that from the best of the best. I am currently waiting to have it removed!
I live in AZ and I also know some people in Wash. state and one of them in particular wont even use her computer anymore because she gets so frustrated with ME.
I have heard from 3 or 4 different computer programers that ME is the WORST on the market and that everyone that has it has the same complaints. One of the biggest ones is that it will seem great at first and after a couple of months, your computer will constantly freeze and you will get cut off line all the time. It gets VERY frustrating......
I would have it removed if I were you. Your computer will also slow down a lot with ME> 98 is much better.
My recommendation would be WinXP or they have a new WinXP Pro.
They are good but I have still heard that 98 is the most accurate and you have the least trouble.

ME= More Errors

I was ruuning it but after a year of problems and asking around I finally went to 98se.ME seems to grow unstable within 4-6 months from what I've been told (and experienced).

Thanks for the testimonials. I have only had ME on my desktop for a cupala weeks. And I just made the mistake of putting it on my laptop just a few days ago. It really sucked up some hard disk space!!! It seems to work okay so far. Folks at work say ME is good. In a few years when ME is not being sold anymore, it will be going for more $$ on EBAY than when it was new. Just like WIN98SE is going for more than it was new.

Why I upgraded to ME was to fix a USB problem that I was having. Then come to find out it didn't fix my problem!! I seem to have a resource issue. I have one more option to try, then I am looking at new Dell's. But they usually come with XP.

My question now is there anyone running the windows version of PP on a ME machine?

You would think when you upgrade OS that life would get better.

Life does get better ... in time.
Windows ME is Windows 98 3rd edition (with major bugs).
Bad news... Windows 98 SE was the last version to be DOS 6.22 backwards compatable.
Windows 2000 and XP use the Windows' NT foundation thus makes it more stable and wont bog your system down much unless you have an old system (pre 2000).

Your resource problem will continue because you lack hard drive space but even if you had infinate HD space you will still have resource problem. I am not sure if you can still do this with Win ME. If you just installed over Win98 then there may be a chance that you still have DOS or Win98 in the background. To find out press F8 before the splash sreen comes up to get into pre-load menu on load up. If you get it and it has the option to load the previous OS then give it a try to see if it will load DOS or Win98. If not then I would recommend that you wipe Win ME from your hard drive and do a clean install with Win98.

For the USB try going into the BIOS (Be very carefull with what you change in there) and check to see if the USB is disabled. If it is then enable it to see if it helps. If it is enabled and still has problems then try going to the manufactors website (if still in business) and look for USB drivers for the correct OS.

I got ME when it was first released, and ran PPII for a year or two on it.
I did tire of ME and on my new PC went back to Win98.
Given enough processor speed and memory 98 whistles.

I think doing cont/alt/delete and closing all the background stuff when running PP software helps.

YMMV

I got some email today from the Intronics people. Said that ME won't work with DOS programmer, and that I would need the Windows version of the software for 50bills. Also said many folks are using it ok with ME, but may need the hardware upgrade. Guess I will just have to try it and see for myself. I was planning on getting the windows version of the programmer anyways.

On the resource issue, it is not hard drive issue, but "system resources". What I did was purchase a PCI card to USB port. The ports would work, but when I hooked up a device to it, and tried to use it, the PC would lock up. I had an expert PC guy look at it, and he found out too much bandwidth was being used when I had USB device connected. All of my PCI slots were full, and it would lock up.

So my next move is too pull the USB(PCI) card, and try to make the onboard USB support work. I ordered the cable that runs from the board to the ports. I had USB support disabled in the bios, while I was trying the PCI card. Now I will have to enable it.

I know this stuff is not really PROM related, so I will end it here. :nono:

PS Grumpy, what does YMMV mean?

Did you get the email that I sent you?

I had ME and never could get the PP to work with it, so I fraged the HD and reloaded windows 98 and do not have any problems now. I have the window's version for the PP and that did not help with ME, but it does work well on 98.

I conversed with Karl at Intronics. I am quite sure I have the DOS programmer. It was bought in Jan 2001.

Here is an update to this story. I read another recent post about someone having problems with XP. He was told to check the output voltage from the AC adapter, since he was also getting that "programmer not found" message.
So I figured what the heck, stuck my DMM on the jack, and low and behold, NO VOLTS! I just wiggled the wires going into the jack, and I could read some volts. I found the jack was broken, where the wire attached to the center solder lug. There was no strain relief at all on the wires. Pretty cheap IMO. I fixed it up nice at work today. Resoldered the wire, shrink sleeve, tape, and some more tape. Now I measure 14.0 vDC open circuit, and dropped down nicely to 9.0 with a 20ohm load. Should hold up good now.

So just for fun I tried Fileprom from ME, it found the programmer and proceeded to run the program in a DOS window. It failed when I actually tried to to burn the chip. I will most likely break for the 50bill windoze version.

Ghost, i did get your email. Karl at Intronics said they have many customers using ME and the software. Could be just a sales pitch!!!

I think it depends alot on each individual PC. Just have to try it.

I've got Xtronics latest software running on my ME laptop and average around a 90-95% read/write success rate.

Glad to hear that some folks are having good luck with ME and the PP. I did just order the windows version of the software. But like I said above, I have the DOS version of the programmer. The Intronics website says to try the unit first with the new software, and if it don't work, have to send it in for a mod, cost 15 bucks. But they tell you on their website what the mods are, so I may just do it myself.

I sort of know a thing or 2 about electronics.

Update to follow.....
