datamaster not working with akm cable

i hooked my new akm cable up to the ALDL and cig lighter, then went to run datamaster. i have the cable plugged into the laptop, but whenever i try to record ALDL data it keeps coming up that there is nothing in any of the com ports. i dont know what im doing wrong, can someone help me out here? im dying without my car

AKM cable here for two years now, works fine with both Datamaster and Moates software.

There's a troubleshooting procedure on Moates' page somewhere, dig it out and see what's wrong.
