I didn't get a ALDL connector for nothing did I?
I just got a ALDL to serial connector for my lap top and I just tried to use winALDL on it and I could not get any data readings and I took a look at the supported vehicles and the 1991 3.1 is not listed and craig moates software won't work since his is all TPI. COuld someone post or PM which software to use and is their anything free out there that will work on my vehicle? I really want to solve this high idle problem and don't have 200-250 to shell out for a scanner or diacom

if im not mistaken, your car has the 730 ECM. If i'm still not mistaken, moates' software works with this (8192 baud).

You're going about this all wrong. It's not just the type of car or engine or ecm for that matter. It's the type of mask that's being used. First things first, you need to see where the data cable is at on the ALDL. It should be at M but it doesn't have to be. This is where a wiring diagram comes in handy. Second, what type of ecm does the car have? This will help determine the mask. Third, you need to see if someone makes scanning software for the mask you have. This is why Craig has three choices in his software, 165, 730, 93 LT1. Notice that it's for TPI V8 cars only and not just any car with the particular ecm. That's because the serial data stream is only alike on ecms using the same mask. The same goes for when you burn a PROM, you can only change data in it correctly if you use the correct mask definition file. Going off of memory you have a 730 ecm and the mask is $88 but you'll need to check this. Also going off memory, no one makes free software for it that I know. So you're going to have to search the 'net. It's either that or write your own scanning software or modify Craigs software for your data stream. For this you need a good commented hack of the mask which has in it the data stream and addresses and mathematical factors.

the data stream information can be found for your car at www.diy-efi.org's FTP site. look for a zip file called "aldlstuff" or something like that. unpack it and you'll find just about every imaginable data stream definition. find the one correct for your car and you have the information you need to create a definition for craigs software.
(open up the "730" file that comes with craigs software with a text editor and you'll see how this works, format, etc).
Note that such actions aren't necessarily supported by the author (if i may speak for him, here), but looking at the code (which you can do too), it should work fine.

Just checked the FTP, took a bit of time of browsing through and could not find this zip file.
I take it back, just found it.

Ok, looking through all this and the index file, I could not find the correct datafile for my car, no 3.1 MPFI or MFI is listed in the index file. A little help please? I already got craig's software to communicate with my vehicle with the help of Rbob and Craig.
I now get rpm readings and battery voltage however almost all the sensors are displayed incorrectly or just do not work, however I believe its like you said and a defination file must be made so I really need to get this done and am asking for your help again, thank you.
