2732A EPROMS: Problematic?

Ive been reading that some people only get a couple of erase/write cycles out of these eproms and then they go south while others say they dont have any problems at all. Is it true about teh eproms only working a few times or is it mainly user error? If it is, what are they doign wrong? I know my stock prom is really off, so much so the car will barely idle so itll probably take me more tehn a few burns to get it right so i dont want to needlesly squander chips because im making a mistake somewhere. On a better note i figured out how to get that crappy stock robinson nugent socket off without delaminating the board so at least i wont have to deal with that thing.

There are several programming voltages for the 2732s.
I always try the lower voltage first and then just raise it until they program for any given batch of proms.

I buy the 2732s only as pulls, and pay a buck or so a piece for them.

What did you do with the socket that was so neat?.

a bucks not bad per chip. Who do you get them from?
Im sure someone else has done this before but basically i cut the socket apart so i could remove it and leave the 24 pins behind and then i could desolder each pin independently. I read that it was a real pita to remove so i thought for sure i would destroy it. Im like a bull in a china shop when it comes to things like this so ill probably still end up breaking the ecm.

i got 3 of them for the hell of it and only one programmed successfully and worked in the ecm. The other two are DOA, which isnt surprising considering that they where made in the friggin early eighties. Heh... and people wonder why alot of them dont work. Thats more then enough time for diffusion effects to set in, not to mention the fact that tehy could have been reprogramed *** knows how many times.
