You can't do this for OBD2 because they don't have a memcal to put it in.

There are ways around that. Plus nobody claimed them to have a memcal. A memcal isnt needed in order to program LS, LT cars and OBD2 in general. They use a flash chip that as of now you must use a cable to download thru the ALDL directly to the flashchip. As you can see this would only eliminate a step in the process. This is just an obstacle for our friends Craig and Mark.

Craig,

Just a couple of questions. I imagine that as it will work on a '165 that it should work on the Australian '808, correct??
Will the ALDL hardware side work with the 808's 160 baud output??

Looking forward to finding one of these in the mail SOON:hail:

Gobble-gobble-gobble...

I was really hoping to have the next PCB round in hand for Thanksgiving, but the vendor decided to dork around getting things rolling last week, so it'll probably be next Monday before I can do the assembly and testing on the next round. Unbelievable. Busted my tail to get things rolling, and then it's hurry up & wait. The boards are being drilled today, and I've got express shipping to my door queued up, but I'm not optimistic. Never know though.

I went through a step-change on the design this go-round to avoid contention between the ECM and AVR. Going to pure digital muxes for the address info. Got my fingers crossed. Everyone I talk with thinks it'll work better.

Oh, and I've added the requested provisions for three A/D inputs, so you will be able to listen in on your WBO2 and what-not.

And added some additional stuff to hopefully make byte updates even more stable than what you've seen before.

Other parts are all either on hand or in the mail, and everything should be here in timely fashion to allow assembly with the PCBs. I also cleared up some board real estate for some new features to be added later, maybe a couple square inches ;^). Cleaned up the back-panel some also, down to only two switches. No jumpers or internal dip switches or anything like that.

Baited breath & hot iron on this end. I'm ready...

Well, it came in on Friday as hoped. I got one assembled, updated some of the firmware, and tested it out on the bench in terms of BIN upload/download. Looks flawless so far (sigh of relief). I'll have to do the in-vehicle testing tonight. Keep your fingers crossed!

AutoProm Update (might want to sit down for this one) :

- Dynamic on-the-fly emulation is now working on the 1227165 (test mule). Can change entire timing / idle tables with no trips or SES flickers. SES flickers a little during a full BIN upload, but the car keeps running.

More to come on the other feature validation. But, the takehome message here is:

IT F~@{!^G works !!

OK, a couple days late, but not a dollar short...

SES flickers a little during a full BIN upload, but the car keeps running.
That happens sometimes when I dont have the prom soldered/zif'd into the memcal. It never throws a code. So that doesn't seem to be an issue. Some ecms will flicker the ses light when in diag mode....

Good to see that "thingie" is panning out for you. So when is the final build date? Gaytalica might get upset with your use of that logo though.

Hey Craig, congrats on the progress! Did you already replace your blown motor? And if so, with what?

When can we expect the first sales run of the product? And, can you do live .bin mod's to it with Tunercat, or do you have to use tuner pro?

By the way, Lars just called me, his lawyers are going to Naptser you for the avatar!

New update:

- Simultaneous datalogging and emulating/RT tuning now working off the same com port. So you can log data / plot variables and make changes, observing the response in real-time. This has been the intended functionality, and it has now been demonstrated as working and stable on the test mule.

More to come...

OK, the first unit has now been shipped out.

...To Mark Mansur...

(great fanfare... "All hail Mark! Hurrah!" ...war cries...)

"Beware ye, any challenge and limitation that stand before us. For behold! You shall lay low before our wrath to escape demise. Yet you shall be swept away with great dispatch, leaving only the memory of your existence to hasten the death of your kind!"

Yes, he's done the software development 'remotely' so far without even a prototype in hand. I'm atremble with anticipation before that which now cometh.

It should work fine I'd think. With Chem, Hondata, Zemulator, Uberdata, etc. Just need to focus a little bit on the software end of the business. Might be a SLIGHT H/W mod needed, but not much.

If you're running at least Win98, then theoretically, yes. not very well though. download TunerPro RT and see how it works.

Emulation and chip burning will work fine, but you'll probably get a *very* slow sample rate on the ALDL stuff with a machine this slow (see min system requirements on the TunerPro web site).

Yes, much closer. The following updates apply:
- Mark has one and has been playing with it all weekend.
- 29C256 programming working fine again with new layout. 2-3x faster than PP2.
- Bootloading of new firmware at Mark's end worked fine.
- Now tested on 1227165 and 1227730 ECMs, works fine on both with a little mod that is incorporated in the PCB layout being submitted tonight.
- Simultaneous ALDL / EMU functionality already illustrated, works fine.

- Reduced instruction set now implemented, still a little bit of migration to do (ALDL, 29F040), but the firmware code (and PC end) is getting cleaned up a LOT.
- Have to upgrade the bootloader routine, since the one implemented presently is for 'internal use only' so to speak.

The firmware and software part takes time, and time is a precious commodity. Nice part is that it's ever-evolving though, and is 'evergreen' from the users' standpoint. Trying to squeeze the effort in where I can and not let everything around me fall to neglect.

I need for the first three or four customers to be hardcore beta testers. I've got a handful of names already for distribution (Sean, Alvin, etc). If you want to be on it and have the available time & experience to feed back the betatesting results, let me know.

So yeah, it's pretty much ready now...

I may not have a lot of experience with this sort of thing, but I would be willing to give it the Newbie Ease of Use beta test. Even better, I would test it out on a Jeep that is retrofitted with GM EFI on a 24 year old engine.
Seriously, though...can't wait to get one! My Jeep is anxiously awaiting the release of said AutoProm...that one little part is all I am waiting on so I don't have to buy a burner and 5000 PROMs.

This is the same thing I'm doing and with the ALDL functions being incorparated into this product it seems like the way to go, I like simplicity, and if one screen (meaning my laptop screen) can let me watch, evaluate and then modify, that makes it easier. I know I've been quiet about this, but now, that this product is on the verge of availability, I think it's time to speak up.

I'd like to know how easy or difficult this will be to use for the first time tuner, about all I've done so far is played with some availble programs that I have downloaded, I have yet to burn an actual PROM due to a lack of ALDL monitoring capability, I can't seem to find any software that is garuenteed to work with the 730 (currently using) or 749 (will be using).

So what is the projected availability date? I would like to have my combination tuned for next spring when the track opens, I have some fueling issues, and would really like to be able to swap to the 2 BAR MAP that I intended to use from the start. I just didn't want to waste money on an ECM for temporary use, if this will work for my application.

Craig,

In your own words what is the difference between the AutoProm that you are doing and the Prominator that Ken and Bill are doing?

Aren't they both setup to offer a single package that has a flashable chip with a built-in programmer and the ability for emulation?

I'm just trying to figure out how both of these products fit into the way I do what I do. I'll definitely be going with one of them ... I'm just trying to figure out the differences.

Trax & others,

I've put together an operating manual for the AutoProm, which can be seen at:
www.moates.net
www.moates.net/autoprom/apmanual.htm
Take a read through, and if any of you have questions at that point, let me know and I'll add clarification to address them.

If I were you, I'd get one (or several) of each. I certainly plan to buy a Prominator! Hopefully these devices will reshape how you do what you do rather than just fitting into present state of the art.

See ya...

Is tuner-pro the only software compatible to make live .bin table changes or does it work with tunercat as well?

No deep pockets here At over $300 a pop I'd be looking at $650+ for both. I just can't justify spending that much money on both ... even though I would like to do it from a geek standpoint - rofl. I can justify spending $325 for one or the other I know me and I would, in the long run, end up using one of them - not both. I think that no matter how you look at it ... there's probably going to be some competition between the products. Seems like a lot of overlap between the products and that somebody is going to have to post the differences and/or pros/cons of each so that would-be buyers can make an informed decision. In any case - both products seem pretty darn awesome. I could only imagine what would have happened if you, Bill, Ken, and Mangus would have collaborated on a single product. Holy crap.

I'm buying the first one to develop or incorporate a wide band controller into it ! Looks like Craig's has the hardware to one day handle it!
