Best things to modify on your first chip??
I just got myself a "speedy" 200mhz laptop today for free from work and decided I was gonna learn DIY-PROM. Just wanted to know what are so good things to do on your first chip??? I know I probably shouldnt mess with VE tables or anything like that.....but would messing with the constants mess everything else up? I just basically wanted to turn off the EGR, etc. Just to kinda get familiar with how everything works. Please forgive this question, but is there a way to hook up your laptop and watch all the sensors/motor on the fly as you drive???? And, is there a way to change settings as you drive?? Sorry for the newbie questions.....
First you need to do more reading. Everything you need to know is on this web site but it takes alot of searching. Read https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/promintro.shtml first. It will explain everything that is involved. Once you get everything you need and have searched and read and read and read posts on anything you have a question about you will be scratching the surface. It isn't that difficult but you need to have a real good grasp on what the computer does and how to control it before you burn your first chip.

the above advice is good.
also:
when first starting out, change one thing at a time..don't go crazy with it. first verify your changes are having the effect you expect, and that they aren't messing anything else up.
take notes. the way I do it, is have a "PROM" folder and beneath that have numbered folders, such as "burn001" or "burn083" or whatever. Each folder has that BIN and a notes.txt file explaining what was changed. this information is very helpful later when you forget what you changed, or can't remember why you changed something, or make a mistake, etc.
