DIY Prom...which do I need 1st?
DIY Prom...which do I need 1st?
Alright...I've read some newbie type posts such as the sticky on the TPI board and feel its time to dive into the computer wrenching portion of my car. I have a computer, obviously, and realize I can get the prom burning equipment for $250-350. Also, I need a good Scantool. Found a good laptop for about $500 total. Don't know what else I need (just a cable and C. Moates software?) to hook up to car to scan, yet...but that will add some cost.
If I can only do one right now...Scantool stuff including laptop, or programming stuff...which should I get 1st...and become accustomed to using?
Thanks

Try more like $50-100.
It's going to bounce around in the car, and there is the remote chance of it getting stolen. And thieves are more likely not to steal a cheap laptop.
As Morley pointed out, you can get going for a min cash outlay. You can always build on what you have. There's no need for say Diacom if you just working on one car.

Burning PROMs without scanning is like driving with your eyes shut.
Do some data logging and ask some questions about your scan results and what you ought to change first. And take all the usual advice and cautions.
