I just asked this question last week, so look here for a fairly current answer.
my posted question

Oh yeah, also start reading everything here. I've been reading this stuff (stickys and search results) for at least a couple of weeks and I'm maybe 1/4 of the way through it all. I do searches and still end up asking dumb questions. All the information you need is here though and it just takes a little time to read and understand it all.

We all started out somewhere. If anyone bites your head off for your question, shake it off and ask it a little differently.

Most/All of the basic questions are answered here on the boards somewhere, and many of the people here just get tired of answering them over and over. Thats the main impetus behind people being "impatient". Do quick search on the keywords of your question before asking and you should be fine. Maybe even start off with "I've done a search and this is what I've found. Is this true? Does this apply to me?" Etc.

I'm of the belief that its OK to ask "stupid" questions as long as you show that you've done at least a little leg word towards finding the answer yourself.

My $0.02.

All of that said, the following (along with TPIGirl's) will answer most of your questions:
