new to tuning

I can do anyhting to my car except reprogram it. I'm not interested in buying aftermarket chips or taking it to someone to do this for me. The problem is I have no idea where to start, what equipment I need or where to get it. I know its not gonna be easy but this is something I must learn how to do. So where do I get my STARTER KIT. LOL!

Hi,
I am also new to the game. after reading countless posts I think I am going to get an autoprom to do my tunning. Check out the stickys at the top of the board. You will find some articles that will point you in the right direction

the auto prom is a great tool to tune with buy you might be better off to start off with the ppII and a laptop and go from there. you need some time to get to know the software and learn what does what. its to easy to mess something up with the auto prom by making changes and not knowing what it will do to the car. at any rate, what ever you decide to do, start off slow with minor changes to the flags and constants before you jump into the tables.

I know I need to start off slow, my problem is that I don't know what I need or where to get it. I don't want to buy something I don't need a pay twice as much for it as what I really need.

From Moates site:

Burn1 $75- Reads/burns chips
GP1 $55- Chip adapter & chips for memcal
Free software like Tuner Pro and that's all you need hardware wise to program.
Plan on many weeks of reading to figure out sort of what tables do what.

For data logging, with a USB port.
Cabl1 $30
ALDU1 $50

IF you want more convience, go with a Prominator ($175) or AutoProm ($325).
The Prominator is used instead of the chip stuff, and the AP will do the same job as all the above.
See the respective posts for what they can do/how etc.

Craigs stuff is the ****!

I'm not sure why you couldn't use an AutoProm in place of a PPII. Its a chip burner too.

You can buy an AUtoProm and save yourself the cash in the long run. Also note that moates offers a much cheaper stand-alone burning solution (Flash-n-Burn - $75) that burns 29C256s - 29F040 and 27SF512s.

AutoProm will work fine for you, regardless of your "level" in this business.

When you open the DIY-PROM Board, at the top are several stickies, the second one down is where to start.

I will be purchasing the BURN1 read/edit. In a couple of days, $75 cant beat that, already have a brand new laptop and Cat cable for data logging. i assume that this will work with the free software dont remember who has it , i know theres someone out there that has it.... time to search the archives.
