confusion

I have looked and searched.
Where do I go to find information on tuning?
I understand(kind of) how to burn, but I need to know how to tune. The Stickies were no help.
Are there books, websites out there with this information.
Also I made a cable and have the Winaldl software but i am not recieving info. i am using the resistor(10k) between a and b
i am not using R4.
89 TBI 8746
Is there a proper startup procedure to follow?
Start car then connect then start program?
Help Thanks

check your comport in winaldl and laptop being set to same.
there is no one real good publication on tuning that i am aware of. i bought a tuning manual from customefis with my cable. it was OK. the stickies above are as good as it gets. the trax artice on part throttle tuning is very good and what you need to study. as well as all the others. read over and over. i did. i began tuning since i had changed the motor to a point where it would not run on stock tune. did not run for a month or not very well. so i was forced to learn. slow process. but better every week. i think i burned a chip or two a week all last summer into fall. 25 datalogs and burns. ask direct questions rather that general ones. they get answered promptly.

thanks for the info.
I am trying to find specific information on the data from logging, what to look for in that data, and what to change, and why.

Well i am going over info on customefis.com and it helps. but not completely. i guess i got awhile to go on the learning.

i started looking through Traxions articles, they are for 7730 ecm. the info still pertain to the 8746 ecms?

i have a 7747 ecu. never had any experience tuning anything but that. i would suppose same as far as other ecus. . areas you need to understand is constants, fuel tables, spark tables, etc. data logging will give you info on cold start, idle closed loop, off idle closed loop. enentually you may want to make an adjustment after reading and understanding the data log. this is done with a "tuning program". i use tunercat and like the support they offer. they respond email in about 4 hours. they are good.

Lucky 13, don't use the 10K resistor on A & B. Doing so will change how the ECM operates.

Just key on, engine off and try to link. The '8746 spits out ALDL data whenever it is powered up.

The '7730 and '8746 share many common traits. The info in Trax's article fits both ECMs. Just the table sizes and locations change, the theory of operation is similar.

As for what to look for in the ALDL stream, you need to understand the ins & outs of the ECM and basic operation. Items such as the INT & BLM are the fuel correction values. These can be used to adjust the VE tables.

The PA3 counter (knock counts) can be used to see if detonation is happening in one particular or more) area. This can be used to adjust the SA table.

Thanks for the info. i was going to try and "hit the books" today and tuning, but kidney stones giving me a problem.
i havent retried connecting to the ecm. I need to check and make sure i didnt fry any of the trasnistors, or resistors when building the cable.
