I think I have been reading many things that point to the possibility of using an EEPROM or Flash PROM in place of my original EEPROM.

What must I do to use a 29C256, for example, in place of the factory installed 27C128. If this is something simple, it will save me from buying an eraser, which would be great.
I read something about burning to only the upper addresses in the bigger chip, and something about burning the .bin twice (once upper, once lower).

Will my stock ECM be able to read these chips ok?

The 256 is twice as large as a 128, so you have to fill up the larger chip.

When you turn the key on the ecm looks at the last entry on the chip to see where to start. So you want to fill up the last half of the chip with the stuff you want to use. You can fill the first half with 00's or FF's, and then the second half with the good stuff.

Another way is to add the two together. That's been covered lots of times. A quick archives search will give ya that.

The ecm doesn't know the difference, nor does it care, so it chugs along with whatever data you give it to read.

 

ok, cool, I was just worried about running a newer electronically eraseable chip in an old computer, didn't know if that would like just erase it in normal use or what.
