Quick to the point

Quick question with a very quick simple answer needed. What type of cable connection is needed to connect to the laptop for prom tuning. I am assuming a Serial Port is the needed connection on the laptop. has anyone done this with a USB cable? thanks for the quick answer.

ok so it turned into two questions....

what are the specs needed on a laptop for this? i'm just preplanning future projects down the road and have access to many laptop options for good prices so just looking for what i need to get started and get certain things out of the way now. thanks!

The connectivity depends on what hardware you're using. Most of the devices that have been around for a while are serial, but the newer stuff (like Craig's AutoProm) can be had in USB.

Anything over a Pentium 300 should be plenty, I would think. Again, it depends on what hardware/software you plan to use.

I personally use the USB AutoProm on a WinXP Dell laptop with a Celeron 600.

IMO, these two will take care of your hardware and software needs, with no concerns about compatability.

http://tunerpro.markmansur.com/
Mark Mansur's TunerPro editing, data scanning, and real time emulation software

http://www.moates.net/
Craig Moate's hardware offerings - data scanning, emulation, chip burning, and lots of neat stuff.

Are there others out there? Sure, lots of choices and good products, but both these fella's are regulars here on ThirdGen, hands-on with their own cars, and have contributed greatly to our ability to do our own efi tuning.

WinALDL is also a good data logging tool for a 165 computer. I tend to use it and make my changes with TunerPro for my PROMinator....... Acquiring a little more familiarity with TunerPro may change that. Time......its all about time!!!!!!!
