removing timing tables
is it possible to run a HEI distributer with vacumm advance until I get the fuel map right?

Sure. Use the HEI dizzy, but hook it up to the electronic advance module, and leave the tan/black EST wire unhooked. The module won't adjust timing this way, so it will effectively run off the mech. and vac. advance. I had my RS running like this two days ago. I don't know that it'll be stable at higher RPMs (haven't tried it,) but it's fine at idle and revving in the shop.
I don't see why you'd want to though. Just plot your timing maps to mimic the mech. and vac. advance and run with that....that way you get the protection of the knock sensor as well.

I haven't had acess to a laptop and wanted to use this as a temporary fix to get better drivability.
