Plug reading questions

Since the only way to get an accurate plug reading is to use a fresh set of plugs for each run, would it be feasable to use one of those abrasive spark plug cleaners? I can get a generic one of those through HF for $8. That would beat the heck out of $20 for a new set of plugs after each WOT reading.

At this point, I really can't afford a WB o2, so the next best thing for me would be plug reading. I suppose it's not all that bad, it'll give me a chance to see how they had to do it in the carburator days I can also keep a close eye on combustion temps and timing then too.

Also, does anyone have a "favorite" plug magnifier/light that they can recommend? It seems like the magnifier the doctor sticks in your ear and throat is pretty popular, but is anyone using the cheap plug readers with success?

No you don't need a new set for each WOT pass, and it's really hard to color a set in one pass. Pro-Stock, and NASCAR use really cold plugs, so they do color them rather quickly.

Sand blasting a plug is about the worst thing you can do to one, since it etchs the porclean.

You can't affford not to buy a WB. With todays prices (~$300), you'll quickly save that in wear, and tear on the engine, not to mention fuel savings.

BTW, you want to plug read, and use a WB, not one or the other.

And you don't have to read EVERY plug, EVERY time.

I also realized after I asked the question that I would not be able to read WOT fuel trim or timing after the first run either, since the discolored metal on the ground strap will not blast clean.

Also, I intend to do both plug reading and WB once I get the money, but I probably won't have the cash for the WBo2 unless I can get my brother or dad to go in on it with me.

Redngold, the plan is to read the first 3 or 4 complete sets to ensure proper and even combustion, and then just pull one or two at a time to read my changes. It might not be nessesary, but I feel safer doing that

I am seriously looking into the innovate WB, but $$$ is the issue right now.
