Datalogging with $58 and aldl cable...

I'm trying to hook up my windows xp laptop to my $58 ecu, using a two resistor designed aldl cable, and I'm unsure on how to set up the computer, program, etc. to have my computer see the car. Do i need a 10k resistor between ports a and b on the aldl port?
What baud rate should the com port be set up to on windows xp, and moates free software, what should it be set at for the $58 ecu, 93 lt1 ecm? or no?

Thanks again guys, you are all a ton of help.

If you have 10k between A-B you will have raised idle (service mode?). Not having the 10k you will have the des idle speed in prom., this Is how I scan my car.

I always use TTS with the $58 code, I dont know if moates works with $58?

Never tried with XP but I think baud rate I think should be 8192.....

I don't know if Moates software is designed for $58. I *think* it will only work for $8D. It's been a while since I tried that software. So, this information may be quite a bit out of date.

You can opt to use Tunerpro's software to scan the vehicle. I've had very good luck with it. I've also tried the TTS Datamaster software with good results. You should be able to set the baud rate and COM port from within the individual application regardless of operating system. (ASSuming the COM port is present, enabled, etc....)

Nice, i will try that, and winaldl. What baud rate should the program and the computers com port be set at to see each other with the $58?

Unless WinALDL has been updated, I think it will only handle 160 baud ECMs (like the 7747). Again, my information may be outdated....

I think your immediate "free" choices are Tunerpro and Datamaster. I'm sure there are other applications that will allow communication between the ECM and PC. But, Tunerpro really is "free" and Datamaster allows 10 recordings before you have to buy. Couple that with a bunch of people on this site that have enough experience with these applications and your choice should be a little easier.

Each application will "take over" the COM port of your PC to communicate at the proper rate. (Which should be something close to 8192.) All you have to do with either of the above applications is tell it which COM port you're using and the data transfer rate (not to be confused with the baud rate). If you play with the settings in the application *OR* (heaven forbid if you're a guy) read the instructions, this should become clear.

So with tunerpro or datamaster to hook up to the 749 computer? Has anyone successfully done either of these programs? and if so, which one did they use and what type of aldl cable?

I've used both, but mostly TunerPro RT. I just use the 2-transistor design cable (with external +12v connnection).

I have TTS and it works great, havent tested $58 and Tunerpro yet.
The cable I have used are both the Max232 and 2-trans with power from laptop and both works great.

Sweet, so a 2 transistor cable without an external power source does work with the 749? Exactly what I was looking for, thanks guys. Now was there any special settings or anything needed in tunerpro to get this set up correctly?

YMMV.....it depends on the laptop and if it can drive enough current from its RS232 port. Mine could not....I tried. I first built the 2-trans internally powered cable and tried many hours to get it to work. No dice. As soon as I move the +12v to a vehicle source it worked.

I hardwired the cable into the vehicle at the back of the ALDL port and to a +12v source. Works fine a I can hide it under the carpet...but I never do.....always logging!

I just bought a 2 transistor cable, and am still having troubles hooking it up to the computer.

Datamaster, when I try and test connection under aldl logging, i get no adapter or pcm detected. But sometimes when I am cranking the car over, and press test, it gives me unknown pcm type?

Tunerpro, when I try to connect to ecm, no dice at all.

Freescan, when trying to crank the car over with freescan attempting to connect to the computer, freescan gets an error and shuts down.

With hyperterminal open, and a watching com port 1, i get a few strange letters when trying to crank over the car, sometimes, but only about 1-2 letters for the most part.

Anyone have the same problems? Is it my cable that I bought? is there anything I can do to test the laptops serial port even though the wire I bought, I am using the 12v cig lighter?

Thanks

pj

Based on some of your new posts, it sounds like you solved the scanner problem? If so, (and for posterity) can you let us know what you found? It would seem you went as far as getting a 7730 ECM to try, too? Or, am I'm ASSuming too much here?

I couldn't for the life of me get my laptop to scan with the cable. Until I figured out that if you plug in the cigarette lighter adapter, that you should only plug in the data cable and not the other ground also! Even though directions on the web, and even from the seller of the cable instruct you to do so, just plug in the cigarette adapter, and ONLY the data cable to the ecm.

This got the connection working quite good with the 749, even though sometimes now it doesn't work erratically, but I believe that has to do with the serial connection to the laptop, and not the cable itself, I am still testing that out.

If trying to datalog with the $749, I have been using TunerPro RT, with aldl line files gotten from the SYTY board, if anyone needs those, just shout out and I will edit this post and add them in. Some syty guys are working on a very nice, very informative $58.xdf file that includes notes and explains mostly what every important parameter does for Tunerpro 4.0 beta! It's sweet, but the xdf file at this moment in time is only for 3 bar setups, which is something that I do not have. With the tunerpro 4.0 beta, it displays aldl streams much better, with multiple gage style setup to display o2 sensor, rpm, etc....

Balael6 there isn't much difference between the 3 bar and 2 bar xdf file except a couple of headers in the MAP tables. 3 bar MAP tables start at 135 kpa and 2 bar Map tables start at 90 kpa (100 kpa is 0 psi. 90kpa is in vaccum) Other wise the rest is the same of the xdf is the same.

We are going to add the 2 bar MAP tables back into the xdf so there will be 1 xdf file that has both in it.

Ty1295 has done all of the work on the one on nwstp.com. It is a work in progress so if you find any errors, please let us know so can we correct them.

So could I go about using it to tune my 2 bar map bins? Or would there be a problem with that? I love what you guys have done with it, seriously that's awesome, I will be buying tunerpro 4.0 for sure when it becomes available, or donating.

I'm a c++/java programmer, and am just now really getting into the coding of the $58, and fuel injection for that matter. I will be sure and try to help as much as i can.
