Datalogging via USB -> COM convetor with TunerPro/RT

Since new laptops don't come with a standard COM port.
Is there any issue with using a USB to COM convertor that you can buy for $20??

I myself have bought a PCMCIA COM card for the laptop. But I see you can buy these cheapo convertors is there any issue with these?

Have got ostrich and the ALDL data cable and using Tunerpro. Am I better off with the PCMCIA COM card or can I get one of those convertors and it will do the trick?

I tried 2 USB-serial adaptors without success. I have read about some guys who have had success with a particular RS adaptor. I'd think you would be better off with your PCMCIA card.

I tried three diffrent USB to serial adapters before I got one from the 'shack to work on WinALDL. I used it for a while, but it wont work for me on Tunerpro. I ended up buying a cheapy laptop with serial on EBAY and it works great.

Yep..........the Moate's aldl1 works great with winaldl and datamaster.

Looking at a Zeitronix WB and its serial.

Might still have to get an adapter.

I bought a PCMCIA com port card and am having some problems. It installed itself fine in XP. It is listed in the device manager as working peoperly but TunerPro RT cannot find a com port when I try and datalog.

I followed the steps in installing the settings for the card as it says in the manual to set crystal frequency to 1.8432MHz. and also the prescaler value to 8.625.

I also niticed the baud rate is set to 9600. Is this all good?

The laptop is a 1.8ghz celeron. The data cable works on my old laptop but i want to use the new one as I have also installed ostrich and just want to use one laptop.

Any ideas?

Argh maybe disregard my previous post as I did not set the COM port in Tunerpro. I was looking for it and could not find it since I was in a rush. Now i have located it I think that is the problem in my case.
