Has this prom been edited?

im not into the prom editing yet.... but im having a problem with my car, and im thinking maybe some previous owner edited the prom. because it has a new computer from napa(the correct one) and the prom just snaps out like its after market, i thought they were soldered in. so i think someone has did some prom tuning with it before, is there a way to tell if it has been modified?

i looked over chapter 3, and i dont see anything on how to tell if the prom has been modified or not, i dont know what exactly im looking for. i thought you can only modify proms if they are aftermarket, not the original ones correct? so i figure the stock prom looks different than an aftermarket reprogramable prom.

If that doesn't answer your question then I don't know what would. You can modify stock memcals, it was what was done before the adaptors became so available.

Post a picture. That'd certainly be more clear, eh?

it looks just like that, basically what you guys are telling me is that i wont be able to find out if it was modified or not unless i had the prom burning equipment correct?

If it looks like that its a stock memcal. If it has the blue lid on it (as in the pic), then its very likely to not be modified.

If by "I can take it out" you mean you can take the entire memcal out like in the picture, that is completely normal and stock.

So, in summary, its very, very likely your memcal/chip has not been modified.

what car is this out of?

your info talks about a 91 L98 Z28, but the computer in the picture doesn't look like a '730 computer (the stock computer in a 90-92 TPI car), and the prom doesn't look like it has AUJP 1615 on it (the stock codes on a 90-92 350).

share some more info?

other than it looks like this isn't "correct" for a 91 L98 Z28, it all looks unmodified.

edit: corrected aujp1615...

The picture he posted isn't his setup. He said "it looks like".

correct that is a picture i found, the ecm does NOT look like that, but the prom looks exactly like that. this is for a 91 z28 5.7L just like my info says. the numbers i found on the ecm are:
XTP650
02102092

OEM Reference #'s:
1227730
16196344
16198262

numbers on the prom that i see through the holes:
AUJP
1615
1348
1R0075

It snaps out of the ecm just like the picture is shown, kind of similar to a stick of ram for a home cpu, has the two tangs that hold it down when you push in on it.

ok, yep, you're completely stock.

..which is, of course, probably the best place to start learning!
