Prom question

I recently put a '89 305 TPI Auto trans PROM in my '88 305 TPI manual trans car and I'd like to get it to work. My '88 was optioned without VATS but there is a 5v wire going into the ecm where the VATS wire would normally go. I can't find an explaination for this wire anywhere in the service manual. I've unplugged the coldstart injector and the cold start sensor. I can get the engine to crank but not run. The car shows no codes and I have spark and fuel. Every now and then it will start but then immediately die. If I but the '88 chip in the car it starts right up. Everyone told me this wouldn't work but I'd like to see if I can do it anyway. I don't think the problem is VATS related but I'm really not sure. Any help would be REALLY appreciated.

Burn a new PROM with the '89 code and turned VATs off?

RBob.

I guess that's my only solution. Now if getting the rust out of my floor pan was only that easy.
